Going grey with dyed hair

Last October, I dyed my naturally very dark hair red with a 'lightening' dye that clearly contained bleach or something. This was fine, as I got the colour I wanted and I've bleached it before.

Then just before Christmas, I got a sidecut which I love, and now that's starting to show lovely grey streaks.

I can see the odd silvery strand coming through in my natural hair, but it's at that weird growing out dye stage where most of it still looks quite red. I love my natural colour and I'd quite like to keep it at that for a while, but this is going to take a while to grow out unless it cut, which I don't really want to do.

I'm tempted to dye a really dark grey over the red - the one I'm looking at has been described as almost black before it starts to fade out into a charcoal shade. One the one hand, I'd have an overall colour I really like! On the other, it will be even longer before my natural grey starts to show through on the longer parts of my hair.

Any thoughts? For reference, I'm 35 but look younger in a profession where looking older is a bit of an advantage, but also unusually dyed hair isn't that uncommon.

I'd use a semi-permanent colour until you've grown it right out and then let that semi fade-out with no roots.

thanks, system! I feel like if I do go that charcoal colour, it will a nicer transition for the grey strands as well.

Yes, transitioning hair can be hard, but you can do it! I've seen some great "going grey" blogs out there with all sorts of ideas. I currently henna mine, but when the back goes 100% grey, I plan to grow it out. The joy of no more hair-dyeing awaits me Grin
