Dress needed for black tie work do

I am feeling somewhat lost in the dress jungle and would love some suggestions, recommendations or ideas if anyone can spare the time!

I'll be attending a work conference in a couple of weeks, in the evening there is a black tie gala dinner. The venue is a posh hotel and the conference is finance related so more formal than informal crowd.

In terms of size/style, I'm a size 12, squidgy in the middle after 2 kids and a full time desk job, late 30's. Want to look professional but not boring, attractive but not slutty, fashionable but not too avantgarde, it's impossible! Any suggestions much appreciated...

No suggestions but am also looking for similar! Only I'm 10 years older and a dress size bigger

What the budget and what sort of colours suit you?

I have a very similar one I wear with a shimmery "stole"/scarf thing for black tie events (don't go to enough for it to be noticed as the same every time)
