interview outfit help...

Looking for ideas for what to wear for job interviews. I don't have one yet, but am job hunting, so I would like to have an outfit or two in the wardrobe, ready to go.

It needs to be conservative-ish - was thinking of a suit but now I wonder if I'm better off in something I feel comfortable and confident in, rather than trying to pull off a suit in which I feel uncomfortable. After years of working in universities where most people dressed extremely casually (e.g., jeans and t-shirt), I'm feeling a bit lost!

I am pretty short waisted with small boobs so find it really really hard to find jackets/blazers that fit properly - they just gape horribly around the bust because they're made for someone with about 2 inches more height between their waist and their shoulders, and about 2 inches more bust as well. All the online advice for short-waisted women seems to suggest not going for a cropped jacket but rather something that ends at the hips so as to give the impression of more length - but doesn't explain how to get over the not-fitting issue...?

I also cannot do high heels - too many foot/back/neck issues for that. So ideas for shoes would also be welcome.

Really not sure about colours either - black outfit with white shirt was what I was thinking, but not sure those are my best colours. I have been reading online about 'getting your colours done' which isn't something I'm about to do but for what it's worth, I have very pale yellow-ish skin and very dark brown hair which is going a bit grey (actually pure white) and I think I'm some sort of Autumn though some quizzes put me into a variety of Winter.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome!

I was put off wearing black skirt/ white blouse a long time ago because workmates teased me about being a "waitress".

But I think conservative is the way to go for clothes colours, but you can add a more edgy accessory - scarf/ bag/ necklace.

Re the short waist thing, have you tried a "Petites" brand like Precis?

Re shoes, I like flat Mary Janes but am aware they are not everyone's cup of tea. I like the strap keeping them on my feet.

What you wear depends on the job you are going for, but I would keep interview clothes on the conservative side of the house style.

Also I am in my 50s, you may have different thoughts!

The black trousers/white shirt makes me think of nervous school leavers at their first interviews.

What do you like to wear?
What sort of jobs/industry are you looking at?
