It really is a miracle cream...

My DS has ocd. He’s had a lot of treatment, over the years and we know that the next step is inpatient treatment. The is no unit locally so, he’d need to be in The Maudsley (London) but he has to wait til he’s 18. He’s 17 now.

Recently, he’s taken to scrubbing his skin with just about anything he can get his hands on. I removed anything potentially abrasive but, even a soft facecloth can be a weapon in the wrong hands.

He came to me on Saturday morning and said his skin was itchy and sore. “Where abouts?” I asked. “Well, all over, really”. I asked him to show me and was shocked to see there were big (side plate sized) parts of his body which had no skin at all. Groin, back of knees and inside elbows. He flatly refused the gp but agreed to my putting cream on. So Sat evening, Sun morning & evening, same Monday and this morning I slathered it on. This am, whole areas of skin that were burnt looking with the skin broken and bleeding, are pretty much healed.

I know it’s neither stylish nor particularly beautiful but AVEENO CREAM with COLLOIDAL OATS is a miracle formula. Better than anything the doctor gave me in the past and though it’s expensive for the amount I need to use am and pm, it works.

Just saying... 😊

Really glad you found something that works.

I use an Aveeno face cream which I find fab and saves me a fortune after years of Clarins.

MinervaMermaid · 24/04/2018 10:40

Aveeno is the only thing that works on my daughter's troubled skin too- have tried multiple others too.

SukiTheDog · 24/04/2018 10:43

@May, they do a Face Cream too? Where from, please?

That's great , is your sons ocd regards to washing and germs ? I grew up with a ds like this so I know exactly what you are going through . She is mid 40's now And although she still doesn't like dirt or germs she lives a normal life with a job and husband etc . Good luck

pigpoglet · 24/04/2018 10:44

D sis that should read

LastOneDancing · 24/04/2018 10:45

My DS has eczema and Aveeno is great for both treating it and keeping it at bay.

Boots, Sainsburys and Lloyd's quite often have it on special if his GP won't prescribe it.

Im glad it's helped your son OP, I hope gets the help he needs - that sounds really stressful for both of you.

SukiTheDog · 24/04/2018 10:48

@pigpog, his ocd has many forms 😡. It kind of shapeshifts but, always, there’s the contamination aspect. Good to hear your sister has managed to lead a “normal” life despite it. It’ll never go away will it? I’m told he needs to learn to “manage” it.

We watched an excellent (though harrowing at times) film last night. We’ve seen it many times “Dirty Filthy Love” with a young Michael Sheen (the Welsh actor) and DS loves it.

@Last, yes, I’ll keep an eye open for the offers. I bought it in boots but the 300ml was £14.69 and the £500ml £15.99. So, obviously, went for the 500.

I asked the gp to prescribe but he refused (a while ago now) so, I just binned all the stuff he’s given me over time (all a waste of NHS money, imo) and now buy the AVEENO. But for us, it HAS to be the Colloidal Oats one.

pigpoglet · 24/04/2018 11:40

@SukiTheDog no it never goes away but she used to have a ride mark where her hands were red raw all through her childhood . It was triggered by them spraying insecticide on our school field and being told it was poisonous. She does have medication for depression and anxiety but on the whole she is great . I hope you get the help you need . I eat very annoyed when people throw about ocd when you like your house tidy . It's so. So so much more than that and can be totally debilitating.

gingertom11 · 24/04/2018 12:17

Hi OP, just googled to have a look and see it's on offer at Superdrug at the mo - £10.59 for 500ml as opposed to £15.99. Glad you've got something that works!

SukiTheDog · 24/04/2018 12:36

@gingertom, thanks. Will stock up!

@pig, yes, I know that tide mark well. The help, beyond meds and CBT is non existent in our area. We have a psychiatric care facility but it’s not deemed suitable for him. So, let’s hope he can manage til he’s 18.

Mum had to pay for help for her as no one knew what to do . It was a tricky childhood as I was more of a carer than a sister but I do love her . 😍

user1467718508 · 24/04/2018 14:47

runs to Superdrug to buy

Grin thanks for the tip!

Bananajam · 24/04/2018 19:16

If you know anyone with a Costco card, they have regular deals on Aveeno cream - I have psoriasis and it works so much better on my skin than other GP prescribed creams have. I always have a supply in ready for a flare up.

MissMarplesKnitting · 24/04/2018 19:21

Aveeno is my go to cream for anything involving angry skin. I have very sensitive, reactive skin, DS has eczema and it just is fab. DD had chicken pox recently and it even helped her.

NotTheNineInchNails · 24/04/2018 19:23

I've managed to get the Aveeno hand cream with colloidal oats from Savers before, I wonder if they do any others? It was quite a while ago though. I love it. The only thing that works on my unbearably dry hands.

bakingbee · 24/04/2018 19:53

Why does he have to wait till 18! He can be seen at the specialist OCD team at the Michael Rutter Centre for children and young people. They work with young people from all over the UK

OCSockOrphanage · 24/04/2018 19:56

The baby-safe, anti-itch formula saved my life, and my skin, recently. I think it's also anti-colloidal with oats, but would need to check pack. In the baby aisle, which I don't really travel anymore.

LondonGin · 24/04/2018 20:03

Costco generally have the blue stripe aveeno- I think the colloidal pats one is the green stripe one. It is fab stuff. Their hand cream really does last through hand washing. I stock up when it’s a third off in boots. But often I just google and buy on line where it’s cheapesf

cafcesque · 24/04/2018 20:22

Aveeno is great! I use it on my daughter's poorly skin (which she inherited from me). Asda often have it on 3 for 2 and about 4-5 quid for one of the big tubes. 400ml i think.
Great it's helping your ds Smile

Wittow · 24/04/2018 20:25

it is available on prescription, my mum had it xx I nicked a bottle off her lol xx

SukiTheDog · 24/04/2018 20:38

It seems such a simple formula but is really so, so good. When I finish my moisturiser I think I’ll start using that instead.

OP posts:
Luckingfovely · 24/04/2018 20:41

Yes! It's just saved my skin from the worst ever heat rash!

Luckingfovely · 24/04/2018 20:45

And I did not know that they did face cream! Have never seen it in the UK, but just found it on Amazon:

Anybody else tried it, any good?

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Facial Moisturizer With Broad Spectrum Spf 30, 2.5 Fl. Oz https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0013OKSAY/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_AK43AbXBHYF45

suchatiredbunny · 24/04/2018 20:48

Our Costco usually stocks a three pack of the green Aveeno in tubes, it's about £7 which is lots cheaper than anywhere else not by the time you spend another hundred quid on stuff you didn't know you needed before you went in though
