Shorts for big bum/hips and tiny waist

I've been looking for shorts for this summer and am finding that I need a size 14 to get over my wide hip/bum area, but then I have a massive gale at the back because my waist is probably more like a size 10.

I've lost most of my baby weight from DS1 but it doesn't look like my hip/bum area is going to change much now so I'd like to find something that fits better - any recommendations?

My thighs are quite chunky too as nothing that's close fitting over the legs. Denim shorts for example don't usually suit me because they just cling to my thighs and make them look fatter. I really like the chino style shorts you and they seem to suit my shape better, need to finish sort of mid thigh where my legs start to narrow a bit.

Thank you!

Alternatively, can I alter shorts at all so that they fit better at the back? For example if just bought some shorts from next (link below, can't do a clicky one) and a size 14 fits well over my hips and sits nicely on my hinge area but then there's a huge gale of fabric at he back where they don't sit on my waist properly. Size 12 definitely too small for hip area.

I thought about an elastic and button combo like the inside of DS's trousers but I don't want gathered material either. Gahhhh!

Have you tried high waisted shorts?

jrtt · 22/04/2018 08:58

Not recently, I've always found them the same but perhaps it's worth trying again now my body has changed since having the baby

My body shape is similar to yours, OP, and I have bought Boden Talia shorts for my summer holidays: have tried them on, and they are a flattering fit.
Also eyeing up Hush Marseille shorts, as they seem to be a similar style.

You can get trousers and shorts taken in by a seamstress, they take a V shape out and then alter the waistband. I've had it done to a few pairs if trousers, it works well. Probably your best bet.

I know you said you don't suit demin, but I have a similar shape although less extreme - 14 hips and 10-12 waist with 'solid' thigh and I've found the Sainsbury's denim Bermuda shorts quite flattering in size 12. They contain a fair amount of stretch, but are wide legged, so fit over the hips but don't cling to the thighs.

Why don't you go to a seamstress and alter the waist to fit you? it is a v easy fix, I have done it to both chinos and jeans and it's one less thing to worry about when trying on clothes...Tailoring makes them look more expensive too, as they suit you more.

I find Warehouse bottoms really good - they have the same 11-12 inch gap between waist and hips that I have.

I’ve been getting on really well with Gap girlfriend chino shorts.

Something like these would be perfect as they have an elasticated waist so would fit your waist and are made of floaty material so will cover any size bum and hips.

Wow thanks for all these great suggestions. Looks like I should branch out in my style of shorts perhaps, I shall get on it and report back!

Thank you

What do you think of these? These are Fat Face's Padstow shorts. There is a gape at the back but it's not too bad at all, and I can get away with a belt without the material bunching up. They are supposed to have a turn up at the bottom but I unfolded it for a bit of extra length. Do you think they are too short? I think they could do with being an inch or so longer but I'm thinking that they might loosen up a bit once I've been wearing them for an hour.

Honest thoughts would be great! Sorry about the cellulite and stretch marks!

I just wear them on my hips , I'm a 12 but buy them in size 14 so that they sit a bit lower alleviating the gap problem .

pigpoglet · 26/04/2018 18:54

I think they look fine .

HonkyWonkWoman · 26/04/2018 18:59

They look really nicejrtt, they've got belt hoops so you can always pull the back in with a belt if you want can be bothered.
As long as they're comfy as well, if go for them.
Ah! Just looked at last photo with belt. So yes!
