Maxi dress?

I'm toying with the idea of trying one for the first time in my life. I'm not usually a dress-wearing type (weddings, funerals, and DH's posh Xmas do only) but since having DCs my body had changed and my summer options have become very limited. There are only so many pairs of linen trousers I can wear. Shorts either seem to be cut for those 20yrs older than me or far too short for my becoming-less-then-youthful legs. I like 3/4 trousers but sometimes these are just too hot.

I have read there is a maxi dress for every shape - is this really true? Will I end up looking like a I'm due to pop out DC3 any day soon (my expectation!)? Style is a bit of a mystery to me TBH, I tend to go for comfort and practicality before anything else. Maxi dresses look really comfy (although not hugely practical. I can over-look this for beer garden purposes), but I'm a bit unsure where to start.

I'm 34, a size 12 and 5'7". I'm a kind of hour glass figure but that's down to a broad back and shoulders rather than bust. 'Style' (ha!) wise I am normally jeans and T-shirt/jumper and outdoorsy, and I like hippyish and punk styling (T'was the latter in my teens/20s, but am mellowing into the former these days).

Where's good to shop for one and what cut should I be looking at?
