any one have a Protected Species jacket (esp in white)?

I was looking for a smarter jacket that was still waterproof, and was recommended the ones from Protected Species. They're hugely expensive, so I will have to wait for a sale I think! They do look nice, though, but the only colours that really appeal to me of the one I liked (the shorter one) are either the black or the white. And I have mostly black coats already for other seasons.

But I've had white coats/gilets before, and some of them seem a magnet for dirt, and some of them are utterly fine! And I don't know how to tell beforehand- must be something to do with the type of fabric. The gilet I have now always gets a filthy looking neck from any makeup or anything on my jaw, it gets a mark from the leather from bags worn on my shoulders or across the front, it picks up seat belt marks, the under arms get black looking from dark clothes underneath, it gets newspaper ink transfer if I carry one, etc. Way worse than previous white coats/gilets.

So I'm wary about another one - but yet when they don't get dirty so easily, it's a really nice light colour for a jacket.

I'm also not sure that the short one is long enough, but the long ones seem too long for me (I'm quite short - but I do often wear tunic type tops to hide my shape a bit, and those then stick out of the bottom of jackets, which I am not keen on). I can't really tell if this one is long enough for that or not.

Does anyone have any of their jackets - are they really worth the price? I hope they do have sales at some point!
Does anyone have the white version of any of them, and can tell me how easily it gets dirty with just normal every day wear? (I know you can wash them, but not every few days!). thanks.

If you aren't sure on the colour front they'll send you swatch fabrics Grin

Redact · 22/04/2018 20:37

Thanks for your replies, I'll request a color swatch.

PickleFish · 22/04/2018 21:09

and then can you let us know? :)

ooh, waiting for navy is an idea. But I already have dark jackets and something light would be nice.

Just not sure it's long enough. And can't afford to get a mac/parka too!!

I have one black parka and one white mac. It is a creamy colour. Had second a year and not needed to wash it yet. They are fabulous coats, highly rec

Dancergirl · 22/04/2018 21:56

I tried the parka after reading recommendations on here. The fabric was lovely BUT the horrible beige lining?? Went straight back. I don't think they're stylish at all, I felt quite frumpy. Sorry.

But maybe the shorter style is better......

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 22/04/2018 21:59

Yes I have one and they're beautifully made, light to wear and waterproof

So they tick all the boxes bar one ... I feel so frumpy in it

Albadross · 22/04/2018 21:59

Are they made out of white tigers or something? Wink

Dacresmallwilly · 22/04/2018 22:03

I've got the khaki green parka. It's very nice but I'm quite small (1.52M) and the sleeves are quite long so I feel a bit 'swamped' in it.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 22/04/2018 23:22

The shorter jacket is definitely their most stylish cut!

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 22/04/2018 23:47

I disagree, I don't like the short one

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 23/04/2018 07:14

I've got the short one. Does the job but yep, frumpy

0ccamsRazor · 23/04/2018 09:31

I was given the trench and in city scape blue as a gift last year, it is lovely. I am tall, 5ft 10 and the sleeves are long enough!

These are super coats, they are comfy to wear and are completely waterproof. I have had strangers come up to me asking about it. I highly recommend them.

trixymalixy · 23/04/2018 10:54

They send out fabric samples, so you could order a sample in white and test how easily it cleans.

PickleFish · 23/04/2018 13:07

Interesting to hear the mix of reviews now.

Those who think it's frumpy, do you have any other suggestions of something less so?

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/04/2018 14:14

I don't feel frumpy in mine - I have the black parka. I wouldn't wear it as a 'dressy' coat but for walking it's perfect and I think quite stylish.

I like the Mac too but I'm not too keen on the other two. That said, I don't really need another fully waterproof coat so although I like the Mac, I probably won't get it as I can get something very nice for £225

EglantineP · 23/04/2018 14:21

I don't think they're frumpy at all, it depends where/why you're wearing them, they are possibly not for clubbing but I wear my parka for dog walking stuff and the mac on rainy summer days when going to work events. A friend has the short one in white and it looks amazing on her. I don't need it, but i would like it ...

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 23/04/2018 16:11

I don't why I think it's frumpy which I appreciate isn't helpful

I'm quite short at 5 ft 3 and I'm not thin either. I went for the size 12-14 in the shorter city walker and it's quite loose - I'm usually a chubby size 12 I suppose. Being short and err a bit chubby, I just feel non stylish in it. I wear it with my usual skinnies and trainers

The fabric is lovely and it does feel nice and performs well. I just feel it'd be better suited to a taller, willowy figure

PickleFish · 23/04/2018 17:06

I'm a similar height but very much more a 16ish size, so definitely not tall and willowy, so that's interesting.

I need a jacket for pretty much every day wear, both casual and dressy, because I can probably only afford one sort of jacket/coat (which is probably the problem of why I never quite look right, as I try to get one thing to do for all situations!!). I have a black padded winter jacket that's belted and a bit longer than this, kind of bum-length; and a very light linen jacket in navy for the summer that is really not water proof or even wind proof, just a bit of an extra layer. So I need somethign that will do for all weathers and all situations in between!! Trousers, skirts, casual, smart... I know, holy grail, and I'll have to compromise a bit!

I really am thinking I would wear the white city walker one a lot in this weather. I am 5’6” and size 10 but middle aged so frumpy is ok Grin. Pay day on Wednesday so will decide then. I think the mac is lovely too but maybe the short one first

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 23/04/2018 20:55

I'm 5'8, size 8-10 and the short jacket definitely doesn't make me feel frumpy - quite the opposite! But I suppose it's all how you style it out.

Regardless of whichever cut or colour you choose, they're genuinely lovely, very well-made pieces.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 23/04/2018 20:58

Love your user name @RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl!!

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 24/04/2018 19:01

Ha fanks Roadside. It's a great line isn't it?

DazzlingMilton · 25/04/2018 19:30

I’ve worked out what might be making the short one feel frumpy, is it also the buttons??

RolyPolyLilBatFaceGirl · 25/04/2018 20:02

Could be I suppose. It just feels err boxy? No that's not quite right. A bit too loose? Or is it a tiny bit too short?

constantreader · 26/05/2018 14:43

just a heads up!

Protected Species are doing a bank holiday sale for 30% discount on their olive jackets......think it's only on until Monday Smile
