Stylish clothes for short/petite people?

Having wandered around &Other Stories, Cos and Arket seeing lots of things I loved but nothing that fit - does anyone know of similar style clothes that are cut smaller, especially for tops?

Am in London so in theory I have lots of choice but am really struggling. Even Uniqlo seems to have gone all oversized with its tops.

Same issue here. I've had enough. Tops are so square and boxy these days.

CountFosco · 10/04/2018 17:30

I think it's a case of searching for the things that do fit. I got this in COS recently and it was a perfect length on me at 5'2". I've bought a couple of dresses from COS and always buy the ones that look like minis!

Its tops I'm really struggling with. I really want to wear more trousers to work to avoid wearing tights or bare legs over the summer but all the tops are huge.

OK, I think tops are hardest. Petite ranges tend to concentrate on trousers and dresses. I have a petite jacket from Boden and I can really see the difference in fit. And I'm 5'2" so not tiny. Not helpful really!

I quite like a boxy shape provided it's short. So sometimes I just chop a couple of inches from the hem of a top/jumper then roll it over a couple of times. I've never had one unravel on me.

dameofdilemma · 11/04/2018 14:28

Floisme - I don't mind a boxy top but all the tops I tried on in these shops were waaaay too long. Tucked in they looked like I was wearing a nappy.
The only ones that weren't massive, were super tight t shirts in &OS (not the look I want at work....).

I'm worried about spoiling the shape of a top by trying to shorten it ( and I wouldn't attempt it myself). All the ones I liked were either blouses or had particular shapes/designs...I think they'd be tricky to shorten significantly (and I'd need to cut off a good few inches).

I've had trousers/dresses shortened but that's been more straightforward.

Am seriously thinking am going to be spending the summer in the office dressed in t-shirts from Mango!

I have a few lovely blouses from topshop petite range, I have also found warehouse to do some shorter length tops and blouses. Recently ordered gorgeous top from gap as they do petite lengths in most things and I actually find hush tops a good fit too. I'm a size 8 and about 5'1 and I've never had a problem finding ones.

Floisme · 11/04/2018 19:36

dame I wouldn't try and shorten a woven top e.g. blouse/shirt but if it's jersey fabric or knitted then I'm pretty free with the scissors! Like you I find boxy tops are often far too long and it's the only way I know to get that nice slouchy fit plus the right length. Admittedly I've never done it to anything expensive!

QuantumGirl · 11/04/2018 19:53

Gap and Banana Republic have a great petite. ASOS also but quality sometimes is a let down.

Lunaballoon · 11/04/2018 19:55

Vanity sizing and the trend for generally oversized tops doesn’t do us smaller women any favours! As others have said you have to shop around very carefully. I’ve bought a couple of XS shirts from Esprit recently that fit me (5’1).

dameofdilemma · 12/04/2018 09:02

Right am going to try Gap and BR petite online as they seem to have little in store.

Tried Warehouse recently but nothing suitable for work that fit and wasn't subdued enough for me.
Haven't the nerve to go to TopShop at my age though it was a staple for years...

Its works clothes I find a real struggle.

Although it does not have a petite range per se I find Benetton fits petite quite well but there aren't many shops around and their online delivery was quite extensive last time I tried.

MagnifyingGlassSearch · 12/04/2018 11:08

Benetton are a nightmare for returns. They're not free and you have to post to Italy!

dameofdilemma · 12/04/2018 13:24

Am not having much luck...
Gap and BR petite tops are either proper long sleeve work shirts or informal tops (ruffle sleeves and the like) or casual t shirts.
I want something short sleeved but non air con office appropriate for warmer weather.

I can't even find anything on Boden petite.

Have you tried Uniqlo? it's Japanese, so sizes start quite small. If you buy trousers in store, they will shorten them for you for £3 - possibly skirts too, I don't know.

Uniglo18 · 12/04/2018 19:51

Uniqlo is your friend here. It's a Japanese brand so their sizes tend to come up small. I'm 5"2 & 8/10 dress size but in Uniqlo I have to order medium or large depending on the cut.

Uniqlo

CountFosco · 12/04/2018 21:14

Yeah, 5'2" and a size 10 here and a medium in UNIQLO. It's like shopping in the 80s! Having said that I got a linen jumper from.the IdF range and it was far too big (and long) so had to go back.

dameofdilemma · 13/04/2018 17:37

I used to buy a lot from uniqlo and still buy jeans, sweaters, t shirts and coats but their spring/summer work appropriate linen tops and the like are huge in my view (see some of the reviews online too, am not alone). Ditto their silky shirts - lovely but the xxs was massive.
