Dear Sainsbury's... STOP WITH THE VANITY SIZING

I'm slim, a big 8 / small 10. I love Tu at Sainsburys just for the convenience of grabbing stuff with my food shop, and my favourite work shoes are from there and have lasted FOREVER.

Previously I've been anything up to a size 14, but I am reliably always a size less in sainsburys AT LEAST.

In the past this has been ace, and I've swanned around in my size 10 dress feeling smug. But now it's a PITA.

I'm not a rare size or shape, but the size 8s are HUGE and in hindsight even when I was swishing around in my small size dress I don't think the shape was great either.

However this pales in comparison with H&M who have taken the total opposite strategy and make shorts my DDs Barbie can't fit into.

I have the opposite problem, and always find Sainsburys clothes are tighter on me than other supermarkets

Tigresswoods · 09/04/2018 21:54

Agreed. Their sizing is v v v generous.

Butterfly1975 · 09/04/2018 22:16

Agree Sainsbury's clothes are very generous and I think Next are at it too - the last pair of jeans I tried on in my size were enormous. Heard a woman at the till saying she loves that she's a size 8 in everything!

Oldraver · 09/04/2018 22:17

I saw a lovely top last year and they had no 16/18's to choose from so thought I would try on a 14 to see which size I would need to order online.

No 14's either but when I picked up a 12 it looked massive...and fit. I was definitely a 16/18

sheworebluevelet · 09/04/2018 22:22

Over it. What does 10,12 or 0 mean anyway?

I'm a 12 in supermarkets. I'm a 40 -42 in Europe, I'm 10 in the US, I'm a 14 in my head. I know what to buy or I look at the stores size guide that tells me in inches/CMS.

kickingk16 · 09/04/2018 22:33

It is annoying when you fall off the end of the spectrum though! I’m short/petite - I probably come up a size 10 in Topshop (teeny sizing), size 6/8 other places (partly due to all shortness as I’m not a stick), but I’ve given up shopping in places like M&S as the vanity sizing is so big that the smallest sizes are huge. It’s a shame as I like their Autograph range and had some good work stuff there from 10 about years ago. Sounds like Sainsburys have done the same. Annoying as I don’t want to shop in teeny bopper shops in my 30’s!

CallarMorvern · 10/04/2018 05:43

I find I'm a 12/14 on the bottom half in most shops, 12/14 on top. Tu can occasionally be inconsistent, I have one pair of size 10 Tu jeans, but really not to the extent, that I would class them as v.v generous.
I hate threads like this, they just make me (and others probably) feel shit, as I have dieted down from a size 22 and it makes me feel people are saying, you are actually a size 16+ because of vanity sizing.

FrannySalinger · 10/04/2018 06:10

I have no idea about Tu but H&M are a nightmare for this. I'm a 12 but can be anything from a 10 to a 16 in their clothes - I suspect it's more poor quality control at the factories than vanity sizing.

Bluetoo1 · 10/04/2018 06:19

Many trousers or jeans have a belly bulge round the waist. I wouldn't say I have no belly but the upshot of these big waists is that I'm constantly pulling trousers up as they dont' grip your waist.
Another grouse is the no waist wide hip look for tops, wide in comparison to size of chest measurement. I happen to be same measurement bust and hips, nothing fits or flatter my shape now, unless I am just buying the wrong makes.

BlueEyedWonder · 10/04/2018 07:38

I have the same problem as KickingK16
I’m 5ft and a size 6 or 8 in Topshop. Everything I’ve tried in TU hangs off me in the 8.
M&S are the same unless it’s a size 6 in their petite range - and that carries very few items.
I wish sizes were standard across the high street. Who really cares what the number is, I’d just like clothes that fit!

Groovee · 10/04/2018 07:39

I'm a size 10 and Sainsbury's 8's are like tents on me. I'm gutted as I loved their clothes.

AutoFilled · 10/04/2018 07:44

but I’ve given up shopping in places like M&S as the vanity sizing is so big that the smallest sizes are huge.

This. I’m short and size 6/8. I have trousers from topshop from 10 years ago in size 10. Now I fit in their new size 8.i don’t fit anything in next, m&s or tu. The size 6 is like a tent in next! It’s very annoying when you drop off at the bottom of sizes.

MyNameIsJane · 10/04/2018 07:47

I find tailored tops and dresses from Tu extremely tight across the bust but loose elsewhere.

AuntieStella · 10/04/2018 10:19

I find Tu erratic.

But I often like the clothes (jeans and sportswear both good).

Ridiculouslyso · 10/04/2018 10:24

I agree. Can't get anything to fit me there at all. If they are vanity sizing everything they need to offer sizes at the smaller end of the spectrum, probably starting at size bloody 4 (proper size 6 or 8).

Aridane · 10/04/2018 10:30

How strange you should post this. I was about to start a thread asking the opposite Grin !

I looked on their website and most of the models for the clothes I was looking at were wearing a size 12 (whereas with Tesco etc the models are invariably wearing a size 8) - and so I wondered if their clothing came up smaller.

EssentialHummus · 10/04/2018 10:32

Another “Erratic “ from me - anything from 10-14.

RoseWhiteTips · 10/04/2018 10:39

Tu clothing? Why would anybody buy it? It’s just an appalling mishmash of clashing colours.

Adversecamber22 · 10/04/2018 10:40

I have asked for a tape measure in shops and actually measured stuff. I picked up a size 10 and 12 in a shop last week, the 10 was too tight across the bust. I measured the size 12 it was only 34 across the bust. I'm not entirely sure what officially measurements are but it seemed pretty small to me.

I find that if you measure across two items in shops that are supposed to be exactly the same size there is a difference sometimes.

HildaZelda · 10/04/2018 10:52

All the shops are gone completely overboard with the vanity sizing. H&M were always a law unto themselves (in the the direction though) but I now seem to be a size 4 in Primark!
I'm generally a 6-8. There is no way in hell I'm a 4.

SundialInTheShade · 10/04/2018 10:58

Tu clothing is generally awful quality though. Holes after one wear, fades badly, I've given up on it.

retainertrainer · 10/04/2018 11:00

I actually really like Tu especially for work wear and they have some great sales but you’re right, the sizing is ridiculous. I’m an 8 in Sainsbury’s but a 10/12 in reality.
