What would you do with my face?

Hi there mumsnetters. I would like advice on what makeup i should or could wear.
I'm 38, wore gothy/punky makeup as a teen and early 20s. Have recently bought red lipstick and neutral/nude brown eyeshadow. I've got eyeliner, lipliner, mascara as well. I'm just starting to get interested in makeup again but have no idea where to start.
I want a day look but am happy for an extreme/colourful/glamarous day look. I don't have a skincare routine. Just water and dove.
Will prolly get smaller framed glasses when my prescription next needs updating.
Obviously I've name changed for this but am not too bothered if anyone recognises me. Don't know how to rotate the photo, sorry.

What would you do with my face?

Oh ok the photo has rotated. I'd quite like to not be so bloody pink.

What would I do? For day make up.... Eyebrow shaping, brow pencil and a clear mascara or brow gel to keep them tidy. Brows frame everything. Mascara for lashes. A light mineral foundation. You have a cute pout - experiment with lipstick shades to see what suits (ie brings out your eyes, enhances your colouring) or a lip stain mixed with Vaseline might be good if your not used to make up. Now the biggie - To blush or bronze or highlight? I think with your complextion blush with or without highlight.

Head to lush for a skin care regime think your skin could do with products for sensitive skin and the staff there are quite knowledgeable.

What is your natural hair colour? Are you committed to the blonde?

GoldAgainstTheSoul · 09/04/2018 19:00

Natural hair is dark brown. Yes i am staying blonde. Aiming to go white blonde. I know that won't be to everyone's tastes but I like the artificial look.

I would avoid colourfully lipsticks because your lips and nice a different full and will end up looking a bit odd in lipstick (I gave very similar slips and speak from experience). I have nothing useful to add beyond that I'm afraid.

lostinjapan · 09/04/2018 19:19

You have lovely skin. I'd just start off with some minimal make-up: powder, eyeliner, mascara, blusher/bronzer and nude lipstick. Essence (from Wilkinsons) and W7 sell good, cheap make-up if you want to experiment a bit with different types and colours. YouTube is good for make-up tutorials.

Maybe opt for some more fashionable glasses too. I try on glasses in Specsavers, or order free trials from Glasses Direct, to see which styles suit me. Then I shop on SelectSpecs for something similar (at a much cheaper price).

PinkLipsDontLie · 09/04/2018 19:51

I wouldnt pick smaller eyeglasses, just a different shape. For your hair I would pick dark brown, or silver. For makeup I think you suit cool colours, cool pinks for the lips and taupe, plum, bronze for the eyes. You could try the mac or the lancome counter, a day when they are not super busy and experiment there with the help of a makeup artist. Ideally see the colours in natural day light. You definitely need a good blush and a bronzer. I use blushbaby and glow with it by mac and we have similar colouring.

GoldAgainstTheSoul · 09/04/2018 21:59

Thanks all for your ideas. I'll consider all.
Greymisty - I am loathe to pluck my eyebrows as I already have tweezer issues with other bits of body hair and I don't want to make that compulsion worse. I don't know what you mean by highlight on my face.. Do you mean with foundation?

Lostinjapan: can you recc any good youtube tutorials? I wouldn't know where to start looking. With my glasses, i have a v string prescription so have not found an online store which will cater for that. Then i feel limited by what is on offer in opticians. All i know is i dont want big frames.
Pinklips - thanks for the idea about the make up counter. I might try that.

Stronger eyebrows but not really darker - use something like benefit ka brow in shade 2/3 and get them shaped preferably threaded every 3 weeks or something like that
Makes a huge difference to anyone's face
Then I'd use stronger eye make up - curlers, mascara, liner
I'd start with those 2 things

Aworldofmyown · 09/04/2018 22:13

Go and get your eyebrows 'done' dont do them yourself. It does make a huge difference to your face.

CC creme - l'Oreal have a great one that I use.

Fresta · 09/04/2018 22:29

I would start with a skincare routine including a gentle cleanser/makeup remover, moisturiser with spa for daytime and a calming one for night time which should help with redness. Avoid Lush! far too fragranced and irritating.
Then I would use a light coverage foundation, shape my eyebrows, wear a nice lipstick or two in cool toned nudes or a cool red. You will need a pinky blusher, mascara and neutral toned eyeshadows.
I think your face will take make-up well and you could wear anything as you are a bit of a blank canvas.

Fresta · 09/04/2018 22:30

SPF not spa

Brittanyspears · 09/04/2018 22:33

I think a red lip and winged eye liner would look great with your hair. And some slightly funkier specs.

Brittanyspears · 09/04/2018 22:34

Ps. That’s my fave manics album! Great name OP

HintUp · 09/04/2018 22:36

I would switch to contact lenses and also to your original hair colour. I would probably get an expensive haircut once to see if another style would suit your fave better.

LovesMaltesers · 09/04/2018 22:45

Mascara is a definite for you. Your eyes are crying out for it. Eyebrows need shaping slightly to frame your face.
Light foundation, nude lippy. Red would be too harsh with your pale skin and hair.

Hair- being really blunt the colour is not doing you any favours. It's too pale and washes you out. There is too much of a difference between your eyebrow colour and hair. And I think your skin looks too rosy to be a white blonde. I'm sorry - know it sounds harsh but your hair looks very dry and overbleached.

ChishandFips33 · 09/04/2018 22:50

If your are very short sighted like me then I was advised to avoid wide specs as the lens gets thicker the further it has to travel (hope that makes sense!)

trying new frames is a nightmare when you are short sighted as you can't see anything! but could you use an online face recognition thingy to try different styles

Lily lolo does a canny green corrector that would tone down your pinkness

I think you'd suit the eye liner flick too and red lips...50s style

Are you any good styling your hair?

sarah2011 · 09/04/2018 22:52

Lifeaback · 09/04/2018 23:13

I agree with chish- think a vintage vibe would suit you! Eyebrow shape (wax or thread rather than doing them yourself) will brighten your whole face, I think you'd really suit some red lipstick and winged eyeliner.

You have lovely skin so I wouldn't use anything too heavy- maybe something light like a BB cream or the glossier skin tint to give it a dewy finish.

davidbyrneswhitesuit · 10/04/2018 06:52

You look really great, OP.

Eyebrow shape is number one advice from me, too (if you have hair pulling issues, get them done professionally and don't touch them yourself). And different glasses, but the size is fine.

I'm sorry, I read that you're wedded to the hair colour, but it's really not doing you any favours - I don't think your complexion is actually that pink, I think it's just the contrast with the hair. At least go to a really good hairdresser and get some decent advice about a warmer colour of blonde, so it's not in such stark contrast.

Don't do anything with your mouth, it's amazing as is - and agree with all the advice about eyeliner!

Glug44 · 10/04/2018 07:02

To be honest I’d start to overhaul your skincare. Your skin looks sun damaged in the photo - so daily spf 50. Would also suggest double cleansing and a retinol based eyecream as they
have transformed my life!

heartyrebel · 10/04/2018 07:36

God you look young for 38 Grin never been a smoker like myself obviously..
Agree with all the above, eyebrows and mascara mostly and hair colour not great but if you like it you like it

cloudtree · 10/04/2018 07:42

Sorry OP I agree with the others. Your hair colour is the biggest problem here. It does not go with your skin tone at all.

coffeecoffeemorecoffee · 10/04/2018 07:51

Brow shape and tint
