What would you do with my face?

Hi there mumsnetters. I would like advice on what makeup i should or could wear.
I'm 38, wore gothy/punky makeup as a teen and early 20s. Have recently bought red lipstick and neutral/nude brown eyeshadow. I've got eyeliner, lipliner, mascara as well. I'm just starting to get interested in makeup again but have no idea where to start.
I want a day look but am happy for an extreme/colourful/glamarous day look. I don't have a skincare routine. Just water and dove.
Will prolly get smaller framed glasses when my prescription next needs updating.
Obviously I've name changed for this but am not too bothered if anyone recognises me. Don't know how to rotate the photo, sorry.

And perhaps lash tint or lash extensions? You can get the natural look.. will make your eyes stand out more

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/04/2018 08:00

Why don't you go to Mac and get a makeover then buy the products you like? They have very eye popping colours and, despite being pricey, their products last for ages 🌈

Turnedacorner · 10/04/2018 08:07

Ditch the blonde, you'll notice that your pink skin tone will vastly improve.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 10/04/2018 08:29

You look very young, I’m shocked you’re 38 😀 and you have lovely natural
I agree with everyone else that at the moment your brows need doing by a professional and that your hair colour is doing you a real disservice. That’s such a shame. It also looks like it’s harming the condition too.

I can see you stunning with this kind of look

But with shorter hair, or

You have a lovely youthful face but I think there's a contrast between your plump skin and your hair, which does look kind of dry/processed. Sorry, I know you were asking about make up but I think your hair needs to look as youthful as your face or it just won't work as good for you.

If you want to keep your blonde it would really benefit from using Opalex 3, it's a use at home weekly treatment to repair bleached or overprocessed hair. I use it and it's amazing. Wet hair, no washing, apply a coin size blob and comb through, leave overnight if possible and the next morning your hair will be transformed. It's not cheap but a bottle will last you months and months.

A bottle of Fanola - no yellow shampoo will give you the white look you're after without further bleaching or toning.

Check out reviews on the internet for Opalex 3 and Fanola no yellow.

I agree about your brows, I found having them done at a salon (I have them waxed and coloured) gives me no scope to pluck myself as they don't grow back as unruly.

Another tip I think you'd like is to get a pack of individual lashes (short length is plenty long enough) and a tub of lash glue. They're a couple of pound each from the Internet. Just use one lash at the outer corner after you've used a curler and mascara, it will really open up your eyes and it's easy enough to apply just one, even for a novice. To remove at night, and it's advisable or they'll itch, is to use a little olive oil on a cotton ball and kind of hold it then swipe downwards, they come off really easily. It's amazing how just this one lash can give the impression you have big healthy eyelashes.

Greymisty · 10/04/2018 11:55

Highlighters are shimmery to create a luminous look... for showing things off, cheekbones usually. Agree with other pps get brows done professionally if shaping them will cause you problems. It'll really open up your eyes and you'll feel fab.
And disagreeing with other pps hair is there to play with and I think with the right make up you can work any colour. Just make sure you take care of it.

Lotsofsausage · 10/04/2018 20:51

I would maybe consider an updated pair of frames. Make up wise - Tinted moisturiser or BB cream (I love the garner one), a slick of mascara and you're good to go as you have good skin.
I would also invest in months eyebrow waxing and tinting and a good skincare routine - doesn't have to be expensive check out the Superdrug naturally radiant range, usually on 2 4 1 or half price.
Finally, I agree a more natural or easy to maintain hair colour so you don't have the roots! You have great lips and nice skin!

GoldAgainstTheSoul · 11/04/2018 16:48

Hi all. Thank you so much for all input.
I got my brows waxed yesterday. I asked her to do what she thought is best and she took some hairs off the bottom of my brows, between them and tidied them up.

To the person asking if i smoked - i grew up in a smoking household and smoked myself for 6 years. Somehow i still look young but i have weird asthma and the lungs of a 50 year old. I'd rather look my age and be able to breathe properly!

I'll try and get some spf moisturiser.

Re my hair - i know it doesn't suit and is making me look pinker than i am but i love it so am keeping it :p. I might dye it silver or blue or red though. And will try to look after it better though.

You are all fab!

Looking good there op!

Ohyesiam · 11/04/2018 17:08

38? Not 18? I’m impressed.

I'd go for a professional brow threading. It hurts a bit but the shape will be good and you just need to get it redone every few weeks. Not expensive.

A good foundation will give you smooth cover. There's a thread a few days ago on S&B about mixing powder and light foundation or tinted moisturiser to get a really soft, smooth finish.

You have a really fantastic-shaped mouth. If you like the artificial look and are going for white hair, I'd go for bright red lipstick - Marilyn-style

Looks to me like you have a short-sight prescription in those glasses as that makes eyes look smaller than they relaly are. I have the same problem. A really good way around it is to get a neutral eye shadow in a darkish brown and draw a soft smudged line of it under your lower lid. It really makes the yes look bigger if you wear glasses. Then wear whatever eyeshadow you want on top. You'd look good with dramatic kohl and lashes - again - a bit of a Marilyn look.

formerbabe · 11/04/2018 18:19

I know you said you like the artificial look in regards to your hair colour but if I was you, I'd dye my hair to a dark brown...your features and colouring would definitely suit it.

EnidButton · 11/04/2018 18:21

Just water and dove

Envy😩

I think if you like your hair colour then a cooler tone would work better with your skin. Eyebrows are looking good! Have you ever tried eyelash curlers? Really quick and easy way to open up your eyes, then use some lengthening mascara. Makes a huge difference.

Greymisty · 11/04/2018 18:36

The op says she liked her hair and she planning on doing lots of different colours. She can go back to brown any time, to get red, blue, grey, purple, candy etc she has to have a mega light base.

GeorgeTheHippo · 11/04/2018 20:58

You look really young! I agree that you have fab lips and a strong lip colour would be great. Then if you try lots of different foundations I'm sure you will find one to balance your skin and your hair. I had a friend who went for strong hair colours. Every time she changed the colour she went to buy new make up.

augustusglupe · 11/04/2018 21:05

Just popping in to say, you really do not look anything like 38!! You’ve got lovely skin Smile

cloudtree · 11/04/2018 23:16

OP I hope you don't mind me asking but your second photo looks like you might have some dark hair above your top lip? If so (it might just be a shadow) then I'd get that waxed.

I'd then go to a department store and get a light foundation colour matched. Whilst you're there they will probably be able to recommend a soft blusher that will be right for your colouring.

I'd then do winged eyeliner, lashings of mascara on curled eyelashes and a fairly bold lipstick. Vintage look.

MargeryFenworthy · 12/04/2018 08:19

Your hair and glasses need attention. A decent tinted moisturiser and threading will make a world of difference.

LovesMaltesers · 12/04/2018 08:48

If you dye your hair red or blue, or whatever, all the advice here goes out the window! No good trying to advise you on colours if you then change your hair colour to a 'non hair colour colour' !

It might be just the angle of your photos but I'd suggest a fringe of some sort; you have a very high forehead.

I think you'd look much nicer with natural coloured hair. Dyeing your hair and moving away from your own colour never / rarely works because it doesn't work with skin tones. You need to consider the whole picture- hair colour, eye colour, skin colour etc. It's a bit like putting an outfit together - choosing the right top to go with the skirt!

Aworldofmyown · 12/04/2018 12:45

I think you need a hair change, you can still have it blonde though!!!

I saw an actress the other day with really great short platinum blonde hair - she's called Hannah Daniel. The previous poster is right you need some sort of fringe.
I think short white/grey blond, messy style, great new glasses and a pink lip gloss!

Bexter801 · 12/04/2018 12:48

I would definitely be changing the hair colour, and wow you look young for 38

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 12/04/2018 14:42

Re my hair - i know it doesn't suit and is making me look pinker than i am but i love it

I think if you want something that doesn't necessarily flatter or suit you, but that it's something you like and feel good with, then it's very hard to advise. Are you sure you couldn't take some inspiration from the photos on the links I put up? both for style and colouring I mean.
They both have the semi side fringe that other posters are recommending too.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 12/04/2018 15:57

I would struggle to believe you were 28, let alone 38!

I like you blonde but I'd be inclined to warm it up with a champagne toner...I think (echoing others) that the fifties flicky eyeliner and red lip look would be lovely...or flicky eyes and nude lippy in the daytime.

You have great skin so a light foundation, like Bourjois Healthy Mix or City Radiance would suit. A nice peachy cream blush (NO7 do a good one in a stick) I wouldn't mess about with contouring or highlighting until you are happy with applying the basics.

Fresta · 13/04/2018 11:09

I could see you with a deep red hair-colour OP- it would flatter and contrast with your pale skin and then a red lip!
