I am begrudgingly buying into the stupidity of power dressing appearance matters in an attempt to get a better job. Confused

So. Has anyone seen a nice suit recently please?

What size are you and what is your budget? Are you in a very formal work setting?

AdelicaArundel · 09/04/2018 17:16

What's your size?
Colour preference?
Trouser suit or a dress and jacket?
Budget?
What have you looked at , that you've thought "hmmm, not bad"?

It's not stupidity...it's human wiring.
A good suit won't get you the job if you don't have the confidence and ability. But it can make the difference between two candidates who are equally qualified.

theredjellybean · 09/04/2018 17:21

Mine come free most hobbs
But John Lewis own brand is also very good and reasonably priced.. They do jackets, trousers, dresses and skirts.
By far though my shit hot take no prisoners is an armani suit... Fits like tight glove.. Cannot put on an ounce... But it is amazing, and I feel invincible in it... Bought at Mary portas charity shop.

theredjellybean · 09/04/2018 17:21

Sorry.. 'mine come mostly from hobbs'

Pinkvici22 · 09/04/2018 17:24

Depends what sector, what sort of suit (trouser, skirt, dress), budget?

I’d probably go for a dress and jacket personally, in black or grey. Reiss or Ted Baker, and definitely good leather shoes and bag, simple jewellery and nice nails.

Pinkvici22 · 09/04/2018 17:25

Totally agree it’s not stupidity. Wearing a good, well fitting suit gives me confidence which I’m sure helps in an interview situation!

flowery · 09/04/2018 17:41

Are you sure you need a suit? They’re not that common anymore on women, even among high powered individuals in very formal sectors. Dress and jacket?

loveka · 09/04/2018 17:43

Jigsaw suits are gorgeous.

AgentHannahWells · 09/04/2018 17:48

Sorry. I am usually size 14 (12 in some places) and like the idea of dress and jacket. I work with a mix of corporate and creative people. Because I am v good at creative stuff I think I've been written off by corporate side. So I guess I need to look more corporate and I hate the cliche because it's not me.

I don't want to spend more than 100 really. I don't have any interviews lined up just aware I am stuck in a work rut and need to up my game and all that.

Hobbs....excellent dresses.
Their jersey dresses are very forgiving ( I have one in their size 10 and am currently a size 14 in Next Blush) .
If you can get to an outlet, you don't need to spend muchos spendies.

Tommy Hilfiger do forgiving dresses, but can be very preppy. I can usually find a nice navy, useful dress there.

Cos...bit of a Marmite option on MN. Don't dismiss, don't judge on website. Go and try on.
Suits creative/architecture type people as some of the structure in the pieces is interesting.
I have a plain knit zip-up cardi from there, which has a very interesting fold at the back...it is so not another black cardigan from M&S or wherever. Same price though.

loveka · 09/04/2018 18:03

100? Hmmm.

Ebay? Loads of nearly new stuff.

I agree about Cos. They have some fabulous stuff and it looks expensove.

Atalune · 09/04/2018 18:15

Can you invest in a killer jacket to spruce up some existing work wear?

AdelicaArundel · 09/04/2018 18:44

This dress from Cos.

I wear it with thick black tights +/- thin black polo neck.
It can go with knee high boots...fine for running around town.
High heels = work.

carbuckety · 09/04/2018 18:45

Hobbs, jigsaw and banana republic are my go to. If your budget can't stretch to that then next is really good too

peonylover22 · 09/04/2018 19:36

I would honestly consider other smart options - I am a solicitor at a traditional firm and cannot remember the last time I wore a suit. Other options: dress + jacket, cigarette pants or wide leg trousers + jacket, pencil skirt + jacket.
I used to love Banana Republic for well priced workwear but they seem to have vanished. LK Bennett and Reiss are good, but unless in sale will be out of budget. Hobbs a bit frumpy IMO, although they had a much better A/W season. Try H&M and Zara.

Pinkvici22 · 09/04/2018 20:08

I agree Hobbs can be a bit frumpy! The odd nice bits though.

If you’ve got time try eBay or next - you’ll get what you need within budget.

I think it depends where you are, but I work in a corporate field and wear suits most days (mostly dress and jacket suits).

AgentHannahWells · 10/04/2018 09:42

Thank you all. I have time to eBay and now I know what to look out for. I love the Cos look but not sure I could carry it off. I will aim to get to a shop at some point to try stuff on. You are all marvellous Flowers
