Is this normal for Estee Lauder?

I need a new foundation and went to an Estee Lauder counter to do their colour match thing. Woman on counter tried a couple then found one we both liked. She offered me a sample but when I asked her to note down what it was she refused saying that they had taken my details and saved them with the product details but that they weren't allowed to tell people what colour had been used. So I left with an unmarked sample and a Confused face.

Is this normal? Refusing to tell you what they've put on your face seems very odd. I've had samples from other companies before and none have ever refused to say what it was.

Odd...perhaps they think you’ll buy it online or from primark who I have heard do a similar to Lauder foundation

I was colour matched there recently and she said the name of the shade that matched then asked if I would like to purchase. Odd she wouldn't tell you.

Surely though if I like the product then I'll buy it, a dupe is never the same especially with something like foundation where the colour is so important. The only thing I could think was that they're on commission therefore the woman wanted the sale on her account rather than buying it off the internet or another EL counter. Thing is it seemed so unhinged it has put me off going back and I looked like a sparkly orange an hour later anyway.

I used to work for them and yes it's unusual. We noted the colour on the sample card. Maybe she was worried about you buying it elsewhere and losing her commission (although the commission is shit - well it was ten years ago anyway). Personally I didn't care if someone went somewhere else but that's why I was a terrible salesperson Grin
