Tips on dying eyelashes please

I've been dying my own lashes for a while now, I buy the julienne black dye & activator.
I seem to have trouble applying it though as find most of my lashes don't take.
What am I doing wrong?

Are you leaving it on long enough?
I do eyebrows too and always have to do it twice for a noticeable difference.
Are you a redhead? As far as I know red hair sometimes doesn't take the colour all that well.
I think if the room is too hot or too cold it can mess with it.
I stopped using Vaseline on the skin around my eyes as it always seemed to end up on my lashes, which stops the dye. It doesn't stick to my skin anyway.
I use dyelash, find it good.

Maybe I need to do it twice. I'm not a redhead.
My brows due really well but my lashes not so much.
How do you get it on all the lashes without getting it on your skin?

How do you apply it? I use disposable mascara wands which make it easy to apply. If I slip and get any on my skin I just wipe it off quickly with a baby wipe. I use refectocil and only need to apply once.
