What would you wear?

So I find myself a bit short on clothes at the moment (long story) and need to go shopping. Next week there is a parent's afternoon tea type thing for parents at my children's school. So I really need to go out and buy something to wear for that. The school is very naice type of school but I really hate naice mummy clothes. I prefer slightly artsy type clothes. I am a tall 10/12 hour glass. Budget of around £150 for entire outfit. What would you buy if you were me?

What's your colouring? Eye and hair colour? Is it a formal event?

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 14:48

It's not formal. Just afternoon tea. Colour is yellow toned but very pale skin. Brown hair and eyes. I generally look good in dark colours, greens, blues and purples.

I'm a bit worried that it will be still too cold for all those. Thank you for the suggestion though. I had no idea zara was so cheap.

Could you throw on a leather biker jacket just til you get there?
The other option is a tea dress with Cardi and ankle boots(I wear this mostly in winter and this time of year and just add black tights)

Mulberrysilk · 07/04/2018 15:47

Would a dress not be over kill? I'd have thought jeans.

nordicflamingo · 07/04/2018 15:52

Have you looked at some of the stuff on joanie? It’s quirky without being over the top like Lindy bop.

CountFosco · 07/04/2018 15:55

I'd not dress up for an event at school. There will be everything from solicitors wearing formal business attire because they've just pop out of work for a few hours through all the various smart casual options to people who are wearing running gear because the school run is a good time to exercise to people who've been at home and are wearing their most casual clothes.

So, OP if you have nothing to wear for whatever reason don't think about this event, think about what will suit your lifestyle generally.

I go to these sorts of things all the time and am also more arty than mumsy. I usually wear one of the more unusual Boden or Cath Kidston dresses with interesting colour opaques & boots with cardigan or a blazer. Oliver Bonas also has nice stuff. Not too dressy.

littlepill · 07/04/2018 16:00

I also have a couple of black dresses (but not LBDs) which I chop & change with coloured boots, cardigans, opaques & chunky jewellery. They are my lovely, trusty dresses!

Anything from cos?

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 19:19

@caleandtea good idea-thanks!

I quite like these trousers www.cosstores.com/gb/Women/Trousers/Belted_cotton_trousers/46887-88490914.1#c-22755

Go to Hobbs. For a 150 pounds you can get the perfect afternoon tea outfit there. Just tell the shop assistant what you want and let them find the outfits.

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 19:28

@Glug thank you for the suggestion but unfortunately I live in the middle of no where so no local hobbs to go to. Will check out the website though.

@semidepodent toast was exactly what I meant. I didn't realise they were having a sale. Thank you!

In most schools, they will see a range from lawyerly suits to riding gear. What does your wardrobe lack?

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 21:44

@Osock I'm fine for summer stuff and coats but everything else nerds supplementing/replacing (combination of last years moth plague and stuff being worn out/wrong size following children). I bought stuff for summer while on holiday over Christmas. Now that the weather is getting warmer I need to buy some stuff for spring. I was going to wait a bit (very busy atm) but though I might buy something decent looking for this thing. Currently wearing a combination of mummy clothes and my husband's clothing. Obviously will continue to share the items that we both wear but now that my children are old enough not to destroy everything I wear I want to phase out the mummy clothes.

Oh and my suits are in tact thankfully but they aren't particularly relevabt here.

From memory of prep school, clean and pressed was fine. More meant you were going out afterwards! Nice jeans, shirt or sweater, blazer, small heels, small earrings; good to go.

DairyisClosed · 09/04/2018 23:19

The thing is that I really Don't want to buy more of that stuff. Now that my children are not longer snotty and dirty I really never want to wear another pair of jeans again. But I alnist don't know what to but as an alternative. Given the choice u would spend the rest of my life in creased linen. But that really wouldn't do.

OP posts:
Fresta · 10/04/2018 08:54

I wouldn't dress up for a school event. Jeans or trousers and a nice top or blouse will be fine. if you want to dress up a bit i'd go for a tunic style or a long-sleeved casual dress with opaque tights and boots or sensible shoes.

pestilentialboundary · 10/04/2018 09:04

If you are going to spend your life in creased linen, try a weavers apron. [[https://www.tallyarns.co.uk/collections/layercake]]
