Knee-length work dress with pockets... Boden?

ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 19:30

Has anyone spotted any nice work dresses lately? Quite like the look of this from Boden, but the only other dress I've had from them was very low cut and also made me look pregnant, so I'm a bit wary 🙁 (Also, I got a catalogue yesterday, might a discount follow shortly?)

I don't need to be super smart. Flattering to a blimp an apple shape would be nice, and pockets even better! I can only seem to see mini, midi or maxi dresses.. is knee length hopelessly out of date?

Yours Clothing have them, cheap and cheerful.

ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 19:46

Thanks, will look now! I'm trying to filter the Next website and it's just soul destroying Angry

There's a linen mix a-line sleeveless shift dress on Next, in multiple colours. I saw it recommended on MN last year and now have 2 different colours. It's not super-super smart but general office in summer smart. And it has pockets.

polyhymnia · 04/04/2018 19:49

I have no less than 3 of those Boden Phoebe dresses - liked the two I bought last year so much I got another one this year. Found them flattering and so easy to wear - the sort of dress you can put on and forget. And got lots of compliments. Liked the sleeves, the neck, the pockets, and the length- I’m tall so the L is just over my knee, which suits me.
It’s worth at least trying. Boden are good on returns. If you look on the Money board, under Promo codes, you can always find a 20% off code.

polyhymnia · 04/04/2018 19:51

PS what I meant about the neck is that it’s not too low cut.

drspouse · 04/04/2018 19:54

poly are those quite thick jersey? I don't like clingy fabrics!
My favourite dress like this is a French terry type fabric but I got it in the US, sorry!

DianaT1969 · 04/04/2018 19:56

Cos has dresses with pockets that flatter apples. I have two and they are my go-to dress when I need to look 'together'

ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 20:23

Thanks all, I'm on a mission!

ItsLikeRain do you know if a Yours size 16 would be a standard 16, or more like an Evans 16?

I have two of those Phoebe dresses. They are v comfy and I always have people ask me where they are from. Use a code though and get 20% off.

ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 20:32

Is it the A line jersey dresses you like Diana? They look a little shorter than I had in mind.

How tall are you Polyhymnia? If you don't mind me asking? I bought my ill-fated Boden dress in Long and it wasn't flattering! But I think it was a Margot

Not sure they're quite smart enough for work but Joe Browns have some lovely and flattering knee length dresses

mineofuselessinformation · 04/04/2018 20:38

I wear a lot of Boden (usually bought in the sale!)
Look for dresses that are empire line (flow from under the bust) and if you're concerned about cleavage (I have to be careful in my job) then wear a contrasting or matching colour vest underneath so you have a v of that showing.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 04/04/2018 20:43

I think they are pretty true to size. I wear a 16 in jeans and tops and a 16 dress is perfect for me.

TheUncommonReader · 04/04/2018 20:45

I have two of those boden dresses and they are perfect for work. The jersey is thick, they are not at all low cut and the length is just below the knee/on the knee.

yummyeclair · 04/04/2018 20:46

Following with interest

ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 20:46

Mmm not loving Joe Brown's prints Chef, I think I'm old enough to make them look very frumpy!

I love the idea of linen Pollaidh but find it creases it places I'd rather not draw attention too!

Seasalt - classis knee length w pockets. V flattering.

HarrietSchulenberg · 04/04/2018 20:49

I am an apple too and have a couple of Seasalt tunic dresses with pockets that I wear for work with thick tights and biker boots. I'm a 16 and find Seasalt 14 is better fit, but their 16 just means I have a bit more "swing" to my dress. Dresses are a bit like this:
www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/sale/all-sale/raven-jumper-dress-tunic_vista_cinnamon.htm

I have a couple of Mantaray and Joe Browns dresses too but they have no pockets.

ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 20:55

Dammit, Phoebe in black will take 3 weeks Sad. Lots of recommendations too! Anything empire line will definitely have my colleagues gossiping mine

Thanks Rain, I'll give them a go.

I've also ordered this in petite even though I'm 5'9, but no pockets

asos do a dress called the wiggle dress that looks like a similar shape: m.asos.com/asos/asos-design-wiggle-midi-dress-in-floral-print/prd/9092665?clr=multi&SearchQuery=wiggle%20dress&gridcolumn=1&gridrow=6&gridsize=2&pge=1&pgesize=72&totalstyles=41 each season they do a few different styles/patterns. Not sure if it's too formal though!

Ooh Seasalt! Have either of you got Alys?

OP posts:
ShimmeringIce · 04/04/2018 21:14

They are a great shape ninny I just can’t see a colour/pattern I like

I’m in a similar role Again, I guess I’ll have to look at the non-black options

RomaineCalm · 04/04/2018 21:20

I've just had the Boden Kassidy dress. It's a great shape and nice thick jersey with pockets.

For work I'll need to wear a vest underneath as it's a little low but I can see me living in it over the summer.

RomaineCalm · 04/04/2018 21:22

@DianaT1969 If you get chance please could you link to the Cos dress? I love their clothes but find they look so different in real life.
