Adult Acne - Antibiotics?

I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow about my skin. My acne is the worst it's ever been. I'm 30 and over the years have tried everything going. Last year I spent a fortune on a dermalogica treatment program and although it helped slightly I still had spots and financially I couldn't keep it up once my initial batch of products ran out.

My breakouts are mostly hormonal it seems, although I have them the whole month. They are sore, deep, under the skin spots which once they have popped (sorry i know it's gross!) just leave really flaky dry skin which means no makeup sits nicely on it.

As a last resort I've made a doctors appointment after reading online about people using antibiotics. Is there a certain type of antibiotic I should be asking for? Has anyone had any luck with doing this?
I'm getting so down and it's really affecting my confidence.

I was in the same situation in October. Booked to see GP and he put me on a course of doxycycline 100mg said I should keep taking for a year. Also gave me differin - topical treatment. Results have been amazing!!

i wouldn't take antibiotics if i hadn't tried differin. you don't need the gp you can get it from boots via pharmacy. use sunscreen!!!

I take spironolactone, and it has been a wonder drug for me. I saw almost immediate effects, and now I only need to take it for a couple of days a month when I feel my skin starting to play up (I could take it every day, but didn't want to have to have regular blood tests). I also use an antibiotic gel called clindamycin which works better than anything else I have been prescribed or bought over the counter

Thank you so much - will ask about all of these!

I developed adult acne at age 34 in pretty much how you've described. I was put on levofloxacin Diane 35 ( oral contraceptives) and spiranolactine. ( not on NHS though) Almost immediate results. I was in the antibiotics for two weeks but used the ocp and spiranolactone for six months. Almost six years on except for the occasional hormonal spot skin has been quite well.
