Clothing sizes are mental, aren't they?

More and more I'm thinking they are not worth even looking at anymore, and I'll just have to grab an armful in a wide range of sizes to see what fits best.

I know it depends on the cut, the fabric, the style, etc. But why can't we use measurements instead? A cm is a cm after all.

Yesterday I took a punt on some Costco jeans in my size. They are a bit loose, but the next size down was nearly an inch smaller in the waist.

I also noticed they had American sizes alongside UK ones on the label. Size 14 UK equates to size 10 USA!! That's surely ridiculous.

I am overweight but I can fit into clothes that range in size from 8-16. Rendering the entire sizing system utterly meaningless.

Is there an alternative? Are men's clothing sizes so variable? My DH tends to just grab clothes off the rack in his size and job done. No faffing around in changing rooms, no returning funny cut clothes. I know the excuse.is that women come.in all shapes and sizes, but men do as well!

I'm a size 6-8. I bought 3 tops and a rain jacket in Primark recently. The jacket is an extra small and all 3 tops are a size 4 because the size 6 was huge. I am NOT a size 4!

I've always been a size 8 & I've now started wearing size 12 but my weight is exactly the same! I used to be able to grab an item and go, now I have to go to the changing rooms with three different sizes.

M&S are the worst for this, my DH bought two pairs of work trousers after trying one pair on then taking another of same size/ style etc off the rail as assuming they would be indentical only to find they didn’t fit!

Yes, it's annoying. I can generally hold up an item and tell which size will fit me, but that's no help when you're buying online.

I'm a size 10, but that means anything from a 6 to a 12 depending on the store.

cm would be great.

I have jeans and trousers ranging from 10-14 which fit it's irritating so I end up in leggings

Agree with what was said about next. I'm an 8 or a 10 in most shops and wanted to buy a sweatshirt material tunic in 2 colours from next. Tried an 8 in one colour and it was fine so bought in in the other colour too in an 8. Couldn't even get it over my head it was so tight so took it back and swapped for a 10 which hung off me. Ended up going back and trying it in yet another colour, tried on an 8 and a 10, both far too big so ended up with a 6 ! Just crazy, I haven't got time for all this every time I want to buy something! I honestly thought that all the effort I made to lose a lot of weight and the hard work I put in to maintaining it would make clothes shopping a breeze...not so.and I hate having to endlessly try things on.Hmm
