Fascinators

Are fascinators old hat now? Got a wedding coming up and a friend says she’s got one to wear for it and she is usually stylish but I had thought they weren’t fashionable any more
I’m wearing a strapless blue lace dress with a sticky out skirt, crew neck cardi over and a blue biker jacket to toughen it up. Would any sort of hair decoration be ott with my outfit?

I think fascinators are definitely out. There are some amazing hats out there but I’m not sure about the hat + biker jacket combo.

leccybill · 31/03/2018 09:58

I think a really good blow dry looks better than any fascinator.

Aethelthryth · 31/03/2018 10:03

Unless you are under 30 wear a hat or nothing. Mature women in fascinators look, and always have looked, ridiculous. Hat with biker jacket is difficult but not impossible. Fascinator with biker jacket would look daft

Oblomov18 · 31/03/2018 10:28

I've always hated them. Really really don't like them. No idea why my hatred of them is so strong!! Some are ok. Most are awful. Is it because they look twee? Cheap nasty and tacky?

Belindabauer · 31/03/2018 10:32

I'd wear a hat to a formal wedding.
With you wearing a biker jacket, I take it the wedding isn't that formal so wouldn't wear anything on my head.

DarkRoomDarren · 31/03/2018 11:05

I don’t really follow fashion, but I don’t like fascinators. I don’t really understand what they’re for. Hats shade your face, but fascinators usually just make the wearer look like an angler fish.

FlibbertyGiblets · 31/03/2018 11:17

I LOVE a fascinator. Pfft to being passe. I have no taste AT ALL.

Huge guffaw at angler fish , Darren.

Madbengalmum · 31/03/2018 11:19

Fascinators are pretty naff, hats all the way.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 31/03/2018 11:20

Fascinators are so 2008....... Grin

HRTpatch · 31/03/2018 11:21

I have an irrational hatred too.
I'm getting married soon and people keep asking what I'm wearing on my head.
Nothing. I would look ridiculous.

LockedOutOfMN · 31/03/2018 13:43

I loathe them. Hat or hair.

JoyceDivision · 31/03/2018 17:04

Pearls and swine

The best fascinators ever!!

LaurieFairyCake · 31/03/2018 17:12

Your bog standard fascinator like the first picture is crappy but they can look fabulous if you get one offs from Etsy

I’ve bought an amazing one this week for a wedding. I’m not putting it up, don’t want to hear snark about it Grin

Love the middle photo - eighties net veil!

I like the idea of hats but then do you not have to keep it on your head all night to avoid hat hair?

retirednow · 31/03/2018 20:49

Id wear the middle one to Wimbledon but generally speaking they are pretty awful, twiddly bits of fake, feathers

namechangedtoday15 · 31/03/2018 20:58

I think fascinators are a bit dated now but those which are more like hats are lovely. I think it's almost obligatory to wear some sort of head gear at formal weddings - but I'm guessing it's not that kid of wedding if you're wearing a biker jacket.

BubblesBuddy · 31/03/2018 21:41

The one with strawberries is awful!! Just awful. The first one looks like an awning. Both are tasteless. Royal Ascot website has better info about hats. At least chic hats won’t get laughed at!

If you wear a biker jacket - forget the hat. Buy a helmet!

OohIsThatAFlake · 31/03/2018 21:46

But it's a really nice blue leather biker jacket!

BubblesBuddy · 31/03/2018 22:18

Actually I think the off the shoulder dress is worse! Wear a day dress, not an evening dress. Unless you are just going in the evening of course. Blue suede biker might just be ok!

OohIsThatAFlake · 31/03/2018 22:47

It's a strapless dress but with a cardi over which will not be coming off because I have not done enough tricep dips

Fascinators will always = Su Pollard. While I love Su I don’t really want to look like her.

gummywitch · 01/04/2018 00:06

Shopping for DD1's wedding 18 months ago, i fell in love with an ivory ostrich feather type fascinator from Debenhams. Bought it n wore it on the day - absolutely matched my gorgeous red, pink and cream Coast dress, ivory bag and red shoes. Couldn't understand why the photographer seemed to ignore me on the day, seemed like she was snapping everyone else cept me. Soon became clear once i saw other people's pics. I looked like a bird. A bloody ostrich. To be fair, the big nose didnt help. My biggest regret buying that. Don't do it OP

toffee1000 · 01/04/2018 03:34

My head is enormous and doesn’t fit normal-size “wedding”-type hats. If I got invited to a wedding I probably wouldn’t wear any kind of head gear.
