What could I wear with this skirt?

I've ordered this Closet skirt and love it - (and it's on sale so I'm even more pleased with it!). It fits perfectly, it's flattering and it's a bit different. I intend to wear it to a birthday do (a sit-down meal followed by drinks and music in a hired room of a restaurant). But I just don't know what top/shoes/jacket I should put with it.

Please help me!....

  • I want to make it look appropriate for a birthday, not too formal
  • I'm petite (5ft2", small 32C bust, size 6-8 on top)
  • I have a small tattoo in the middle of my upper right arm I'd prefer to cover (embarrassing teen mistake!)
  • I don't want to show off any midriff
  • I'm a wide foot
  • I can't wear super high skyscraper shoes

I'd really appreciate your help MNers, otherwise I'll have to send the skirt back and start all over again and I've already returned 14 potential outfits that I wasn't happy with, it's starting to do my head in!

Kitten heels - Black rollneck if it is still this cold. Chunky jewellery

user1474652148 · 29/03/2018 14:06

Otherwise off shoulder black top

CowInTheMeadow · 29/03/2018 14:09

Black wedges, vest top and little cardie in a colour of your choice?

RapunzelIsHere · 29/03/2018 14:12

Don’t send the skirt back if you love it!

With the skirt I would wear either tights and heeled black boots or no tights and dolly shoes.

For your top half a sheer black blouse- you can get some that have an insert so they’re not see through. Or, just a dressy black top with a nice necklace.

It is quite busy so I'd go with a plain top - a tight one! Long sleeved jumper or t-shirt in black/white/cream/bottle green/navy/burgundy would work, with opaques. This looks knee length so anything resembling ankle boots won't really work, but some pointed flats would look sharp. I don't really like heels either but I think a stiletto heel would look better than a block one. This look NEEDS a necklace in my opinion but go with your usual style!

Caroline680 · 29/03/2018 14:16

i like it a lot.

PellyBay · 29/03/2018 14:18

I would wear a fitted, black top (probably high/roll neck) and long brown boots. Hair up (if long).

Thanks for all suggestions, all sound worth exploring. The only suggestion I wouldn't go with is a tight top. I agree a tight top would look great if I had a flat belly, but I don't Sad Having had a large baby within a petite body, its left it a little frumpy. And I suffer with IBS and frequently suffer with bloating. I think something loose, but something I could tuck in may be an idea?

I like the off shoulder idea, that would potentially cover my tattoo without me getting too hot in a long sleeve top. I couldn't wear anything too thick or knitted if it was long sleeve.

Yes, agree stiletto heel rather than block would probably be a better look. It is a knee length skirt, which is why I love it as it covers my hideous knobbly knees!

A statement necklace sounds like a good way to dress it up. I've never worn a chunky or statement necklace so this may be a good opportunity to give it a try.

Lovely skirt! What about a simple high backed vest like this? I’ve got it in ivory and the double-layer fabric is very flattering.

Black thin blouse tucked in if you prefer something loose on top - there are lots of nice chiffon blouses around at the moment. Wear with a black cami underneath (with some lace trim on show) and a nice pendant. Kitten heel sling-backs.

ASOS and H&M both have a good choice of blouses / Cami tips at a reasonable price.

PugwallsSummer · 29/03/2018 15:02

It's a really lovely skirt :)

PugwallsSummer · 29/03/2018 15:04

Oh, and jacket-wise, for a birthday do I'd wear a leather jacket. And a nice clutch bag.

MamosianAntiMatterChopsticks · 29/03/2018 17:44

I like the vest top from Oasis, definitely something I'd wear. Only issue would be that my tattoo would be on show when I take my jacket off. I'm not sure if I also wore a cardigan to cover the tattoo it would look too 'mumsy' iyswim?

I do have a lightweight black biker jacket, but I know I'll not want to wear it all night.

I like the idea of a sheer blouse with a cami underneath. I'll try that out too. Dressy and lightweight but will cover the tattoo enough to not draw attention.

I have these rose gold sandals (attached) - would they go with this skirt and a black top, or clash?

Hmmm, the sandals are lovely but I’m not sure they go with the skirt. In terms of a top that conceals your tattoo, what about this:

Then there’s no worry about a cardi/jacket making it look frumpy?

A pointy flat would be a good option for your feet as well. Colour wise nude looks great with grey.

And as an aside if you are a size 6-8 on top you are not a 32C. I'd guess a 28DD but get over to the bra intervention threads or check out boob or bust. For comparison I'm 5'2" and a size 10 and wear a 30F.

PugwallsSummer · 30/03/2018 23:21

I think a black shoe would be better with grey. I do like the gold shoes but wouldn't wear them with that skirt.

wellhonestly · 31/03/2018 08:48

I have a very similar skirt. I wear it with a plain black long-sleeve scoop-neck T-shirt style top, black tights and block-heeled black shoes or ankle boots. Then I go all-out on a showy necklace and handbag. (I rarely wear jackets indoors.)
