I’m 48

I’ve looked in the mirror and can’t wear what I used to - my skin is starting to wrinkle and sag and be both oily and dry simulateously - lord knows how that’s even possible but hey ho - fact of life

I had to stop using powder eyeshadow because all of a sudden I’m wearing it on my cheeks as it falls off my eyelids - anyway, I’m using a cream stick now and all good

So I need to update my foundation - I’ve just discovered primer so I guess I’ve also been living under a rock

What primer do you love?
What foundation do you recommend?
What finishing powder, if any?

I’m the color of a cotton ball so anything I get has to be the palest option - complete with freckles - don’t need to cover those tho - I’m used to them now

I'm 51 and I use the lancome primer and no 7 foundation.

48 and wear Boots Botanics Radiance Balm or Nivea Spf 30 coQ10 face cream as primer and Nivea tinted day cream as foundation with Rimmel concealer. No powder.

Smashbox primer

Bare Minerals pro foundation or Dior Forever - both have good coverage but without the mask-like look of some other longwear foundations.

Illamasqua Beyond Veil primer
ELDW foundation

I’m 46 & just discovered Bobbi Brown, I’ve classic combination skin (ageing, lines etc) My favourites are the Soothing Cleansing oil, Vitamin Enriched Face base & foundation stick (with their round brush to apply), Illuminating powder to finish. Reviews speak for themselves, I adore many of the other products aswell but for the basics these are a must have (for me anyway!) 😀 The Enriched Face base was the first product I tried & I was hooked, also smells delicious! I always find the ladies/gents on the counters to be very helpful & will happily give you samples to try first. Have fun

Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick is my new favourite - it really does vanish into my skin. Or The Ordinary Colour serum foundation which is extremely cheap and good.

I don't use a primer, just Ultrasun SPF 30/50 in the summer or a moisturiser with a decent SPF in the winter. I worry about overloading my already quite reactive skin with too many layers of product.

I really struggled with primers and tried loads - smashbox, benefit, No.7 - none of them did much. I should add, I have some quite yucky open pores so wanted a primer that helped with them but none of those did.

Then recently I read (on here, I think) about a primer called Bioderma Sebium Pore Refiner. I've been using it for a few weeks and am really impressed with it - my foundation doesn't sink in to the creases and pores, and I'm also not getting an oily nose anymore. I think it might actually be doing something spooky to my pores so they're less noticeable anyway...

Before I had the right primer, I couldn't get any foundation to work the way I wanted it to. But now I've been going through all the foundations I already had, and they all seem to work well now I have the right base.

My favourite foundation for a bit more coverage is Chanel Les Beiges. But for day to day I find something lighter looks good now my skin is a bit older - Nivea tinted moisturiser or Olay CC cream are both really good. Bourjois 10 hours sleep effect is a really nice light one too.

My favourite primers & foundations are -

  • Nivea Post shave balm, obviously not a primer but works very well as one, particularly i find if followed by Max Factor Ageless Elixir foundation.
  • Wilko's Kiss 'Prime of your life' which I like to follow with L'Oréal Infallible Total Cover - a little bit goes a long way.

My favourite powder is Rimmel Stay Matte in translucent.
