Can I wear (smart) trainers to a wedding?

WhatTheFrock · 26/03/2018 20:47

I wear orthotics as my feet/knees are basically knackered. They really limit the footwear I can wear - trainers and flat boots. I'm going to a wedding soon and am stuck for what to wear without giving up my orthotics.

Any suggestions? Could I get away with a jumpsuit or knee length, unstructured dress and smart trainers? I'm late 40s so I'm not sure I can carry it off even if trainers might be just about acceptable.Confused

Definitely flat boots in preference to trainers.

SellFridges · 26/03/2018 20:49

You’d really have to style it out and not be at all conscious of them. I’d only go with a jumpsuit and very new, clean, plain trainers.

SunnySomer · 26/03/2018 20:51

When I read the title I thought no, but actually I think absolutely yes. I’m the same age and wouldn’t want to wear Hotter shoes to a dressy event, but think white leather trainers and a lovely tea dress could look fabulous.

bastardkitty · 26/03/2018 20:52

It may not be ideal, but it might be necessary. Apologies if you're past this stage, but have you tried brogues? Clarks Hamble Oaks are fab and come in great colours. If not, trainers, maxi dress?

ScattyCharly · 26/03/2018 20:52

Could you wear trousers? Then you could wear boots.

Eminybob · 26/03/2018 20:57

What about something like brogues with the orthotics in?

Paintbox · 26/03/2018 21:00

Surely there are some style of flat shoe that the orthotics would fit in? I wouldn’t wear trainers to a wedding no matter what they were like, just too casual.

Anlaf · 26/03/2018 21:01

Yes - I often do (with a fancy dress), as does DP (with a fancy suit)

Particularly Adidas Gazelles.

Someone here linked to this site dedicated to flat shoes - might be some further inspiration:

I have some fab sparkly UGG trainers, they were last season but they might do something similar now?
I would wear them to a wedding

Starlighter · 26/03/2018 21:03

Smart trainers with a maxi dress?

WhatTheFrock · 26/03/2018 21:05

Interesting mix of replies! I've found brogues tricky (I've been looking for a pair for a while), either too narrow for my feet or not deep enough to take the orthotics (I often have to remove the insole, so it's a problem if shoes come with a moulded insole).

If I found some brogues/boots, what colour would I go for? Something pale?

For trainers I was thinking something spangly from Geox (oh so comfy!!) but maybe they are too trainer like.

The Clarks ones have a thin insole. Could you buy the wide fit and go up a half size to accommodate the orthrotics?

RavenWings · 26/03/2018 21:12

A maxi dress might be a good solution, then you won't see them. Very formal runners and trousers could work too, I just wouldn't do something knee length. I wouldn't wear trainers to a wedding personally, too informal, but you've got a completely understandable reason to.

Some of the flats on that enbrogue site are stunning!

GreenTulips · 26/03/2018 21:14

Have you looked at rocket dog? They have so nice sneakers that would go great with a plain jumpnsuit

NotSoSureX · 26/03/2018 21:20

Google evening trainers. You can find some inspiration

Is it a family wedding who know you have support - or friends who know?

If so then just wear what's comfortable for you and be damned about fashion.

If not then just be comfortable and as other pp have said you have options for outfit.

Have fun!

drumandthebass · 26/03/2018 21:39

loafers?

Heratnumber7 · 26/03/2018 21:46

There's a lot of sitting down at weddings. Can you manage without the inserts just for the day?

hilzilla · 26/03/2018 21:46

If you're not comfortable you won't enjoy yourself as much... And honestly how much time will be spent by anyone else checking out your footwear? I'm sure you will find a shoe that looks good and feels good too 😀

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 26/03/2018 21:49

I have a similar problem with wearing orthotics.

I try and find shoes which have a removable inner sole. Not always easy though.

I also have narrow feet which are a 6.5

Buying shoes was difficult - even more so with orthotics.

I think I would go for the trainer option.

WhatTheFrock · 26/03/2018 22:06

Love the website for flat shoes.

I was thinking maybe more a flatform type shoe or glitzy trainer (not necessarily silver)

Geox https://www.geox.com/en/women/shoes/trainers/ophira-light-grey-D721CB0AU15C1010.html?cgid=women-shoes-sneakers#page=4&start=38

Or these with a knee length dress?!
www.geox.com/en/women/shoes/trainers/gendry-silver-D825TA0CNPVC1007.html?cgid=women-shoes-sneakers#page=4&start=44

Or I could hide trainers under long high waisted wide legged trousers, I have a black pair but what to wear on top without looking like a work outfit Confused
I don't think I could wear a maxi dress, I don't have the curves.

It's a family wedding. I think they would mostly be fine as long as they were smart/clean and the rest of me looked like I'd made an effort. I will get some PA comments from a couple but that will be the case whatever I wear. The 'in laws' on the other hand are an unknown quantity.

zippyswife · 26/03/2018 22:11

If you came to my wedding I would want you to wear what you were comfortable in. As a Pp said white leather trainers with a dress or midi dress or smart black trousers could look great.

WhatTheFrock · 26/03/2018 22:13

Just had a look at rocket dog, they are more casual than I was thinking.

The rainbow trainers are outrageous! They would turn heads.

I've tried wearing other shoes for a few hours and I really suffer for a couple of days after. I can't walk properly. I'd rather break the rules and be comfy (God, I'm getting old).

How about a summerish ankle boot in a pale colour - Karen Brit Chick blogger has a white ankle cowboy boot from Mango with a long spotty skirt. Check it out here.

Ok trainers it is. Thank you, you lovely people. Sorry in advance if I offend any of you 'no trainers' people at the wedding.
Now to find the rest of the outfit!!
