What accessories with this dress?

I'm thinking of getting this dress to wear for a posh afternoon tea at a hotel going on for evening drinks after. I'm a size 20 and 5ft 5 so I don't want anything too OTT. If I got this what would you wear with it in terms of accessories? In particular tights and shoes? Need to be able to walk in the shoes so nothing too high!

What’s your hair like? Do you wear much make up? I could see that dress as quite demure, or with full red lips, quirky red shoes and a retro hairstyle.

angularmerkel · 25/03/2018 09:18

Well by the time I'll be wearing it my hair will be shoulder length, fringe, layered, light brown with darker streaks (hopefully). I like the idea of the colour rather than the demure, especially as we're going out later too.

Because of the nEckline I wouldn’t go with a necklace, I’d go with some fabulous chandelier type earrings and a cuff bracelet. Loads of shoes would work with that dress

Are people still wearing opaque tights? I do but I'm not sure if I'm out of date. I usually wear trousers so I'm rubbish with dresses.

Id go for thinner tights. Bright pink or red lips?

BubblesBuddy · 25/03/2018 09:53

I really wouldn’t do retro in any way. It’s equivalent to fancy dress and not chic. Don’t go with red shoes either. Black suede chunkier heeled pumps would be fine and in keeping with the dress. As it has mesh, I think you need nearly black 10/15 denier tights. Definitely not opaque. They would look very solid with what is, essentially, a going out dress. I totally agree with longer earrings and a bracelet. Smaller size bag, either clutch or top handle.

By the way, there are great trouser suits!!! Afternoon to night really isn’t a problem for trousers and a lovely top. I saw a Times fashion article yesterday saying how wonderful the satin shirt is! Glamourous and easy to wear! Perfect with well cut trousers. I definitely prefer trousers to dresses and have never felt underdressed at The Ritz!

So a more sheer tight. That makes sense so I'm not as 'blocky' looking.

What do you think of these shoes?

Bubbles I like the idea of a trouser suit but I always feel a bit 'worky' in one. I'll have a look for that article. Thanks.

While I wouldn't go with a retro hairstyle I think a red accessory would look good, either shoes or a belt or a bag (plus the red lips if you like wearing makeup). Or a silver bag or shoes would look good. Too much black and you'll start looking like a Mafia widow.

CountFosco · 25/03/2018 19:19

Love the dress BTW, really gorgeous and suitable for lots of occasions.

Shockers · 25/03/2018 19:29

This was the kind of ‘retro’ hair I meant. I don’t think it looks fancy dress-like, but I do think it would look great with that dress.

There's a bit too much visible forehead in show with that hair for my liking 😁
Would really appreciate some ideas on shoes. Also are wraps / pashmina type things completely outdated now?

I think the shoes are great.

Not all trouser suits are workwear. It depends on the cut and fabric. Look at mix and match florals and stripes. Zara usually has something.

BubblesBuddy · 25/03/2018 20:14

You could take a wrap. I don’t think anyone hates them. If you are going to have to walk, just take a winter coat. It’s not warm yet!

mickeymacca · 25/03/2018 21:34

I would wear nude tights with a black Court or block heel and add a lovely biker jacket which you could take off as soon as you enter afternoon venue but will be perfect for the evening. Only buy shoes and jacket you would wear again. No necklace just earrings.

Hey I would keep accessories pretty simple but if it was me I would go bold on the neck like

I think black tights would look v dated with that dress. Flesh coloured would be lovely. Especially with the black shoes.
