Spring Fête outfit, no dresses - help!

Help! Dd will not wear a dress or anything she decrees 'girly' (frills and pink definitely out)
Her summer fête is in May, and she will be may queen. We went shopping today and the only thing she would even remotely consider is these shorts.
www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-chino-shorts-with-stretch-3-16-years-/p/p60146415?image=SD_04_T87_3014D_JB_X_EC_90&color=SEAGREEN&prevPage=plp

So I'm really looking for a top that looks smart to go with them and I'm drawing a total blank.
I'm OK with her not looking like a traditional May queen, but I'd like her to look smart and be happy. She is size 10-11
Any ideas S&B lovelies?

Try Zara kids - they have a great variety of tops

BackforGood · 24/03/2018 22:51

How old is she?

Why did she go for the title of May Queen if she doesn't want to wear anything 'girlie'? Confused

ChangeyMcNameface · 24/03/2018 23:00

Round here May queens are properly poshed up in bridesmaidy type dresses with velvet cloaks, tiaras and multiple attendants.... chino shorts? Really?

EskSmith · 24/03/2018 23:04

She's 9. You don't go for the role. You are pulled out of a hat. Her teacher knows dd and her 'prederences' and is fine with her wearing 'whatever she is comfortable in'

Taffeta, hadn't thought of Zara thank you I'm off for a browse now :)

Change, luckily dd's school is fine with children not conforming blindly to stereotype, if it were not she would not have accepted the role.

Taffeta, the Zara suggestion was a good one thank you but I didn't find anything quite right there.
Any other ideas out there?

I don't know what a may queen is as we don't have that here. What about a jumpsuit? Try boden, M&S or H&M. Or if you've got the shorts already those shops might have nice tops.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 25/03/2018 11:03

Where are you all, where May Queens are still a thing?

Fat Face do some lovely children’s smock top- type things that would be lovely with those shorts

Joinourclub · 25/03/2018 19:32

This spotty top would look nice

How about a playsuit? My dd would never wear dresses but would wear playsuits And tailored shorts .

So many ideas thank you, love the Boden spotty top, and the hare top.
She had a beautiful boden spotty play suit 2 years ago for the fête but discounted them totally this time otherwise that would be a fab suggestion. Mirrivan, love 5he White Zara playsuit but dd wouldn't get out of the door clean in that let alone make it through the dancing.
Not sure she'd go for the waistcoat Mirrivan although I'll show her, pretty certain that she'd say it is too boy-y iyswim!
Thank you again for your ideas, I'll definitely come back and share her final choice :)

I'm used to her Mirrivan but I have to say I'm really impressed with how supportive school and in particular her teacher have been. The girls choose if they want to go in the hat and they were clear before hand that the may queen would have free hand over her outfit. Really refreshing given that a couple of years ago I had to get special permission for her to wear shorts!!

I really like those shorts!

Zara do really nice white floaty blouse/:tops that look great with denim cut offs but would work with those shorts too. Or something like this m.zara.com/uk/en/tropical-print-poplin-top-p01127500.html?v1=5931580&v2=358084

Have you tried Next? They do a lot of monochrome etc.
