Hand baggage only and make up

I'm flying Ryanair to a wedding next week and have opted for hand baggage only - clothes I have got sorted but I'm worried about make up. Are powders (loose and pressed) classed as liquids?! Balm cleansers?

I like my beauty products so I'm worried about fitting everything into that little plastic bag!

I don't travel much so someone should be able to advise you better but I'm sure the powders and pressed powder are fine but any creams, nail polish, mascara and lipstick etc may flag as fluids as would the balm. Have a lovely time

The powders should be fine.
Never heard of a balm cleanser, but looking on Google, I suspect they will be classed as liquid.
Are you traveling with anyone else? Can you share toothpaste, shampoo etc to reduce total liquids?

max 100mls per product - decant stuff into smaller bottles/jars
take mini products if you can get them

buy some toiletries once past security but you cant bring them back if they are over 100mls

Like said I get all the minis of everything and have to be really selective about how much make up to take, I wrongly didn't realise my lipsticks would count and took 5 Mac ones on holiday and literally couldn't fit anything else in the bag to get them in so had to bin my mouthwash and shower gel to fit them in. I also put stuff in DPs and where possible we share things so we don't have to double up. The guys at security are usually really helpful as forcing it all in and fastening the bag for you if you can't quite close it

I buy the mini shower gels, shampoo/conditioner and anything like foundation I decant into the little travel pots that you can buy in Superdrug, Boots etc.

Decant the must-have make up and buy everything else (miniature toiletries) airside in Boots.

Thanks that sounds like a plan - cream eyeshadows liquids as well. Going to have to streamline my look I think!

I travel with hand luggage only twice a month.
I have never had cream eye shadow, concealer, gel liner or mascara confiscated. I always leave them in case and only put mini shampoo etc in clear separate bag
They have objected to perfume bottle which I packed as a gift and was made to open it.
Also I left a mini size of vaseline lip balm in make up bag in case and it was spotted and rechecked.

My top tip is go with nothing and treat yourself to all new make-up from duty free at the airport

It isn't against the rules to take powders through, but a customs security man told me that they show up the same as creams in the scans, so if you have them loose in your hand luggage they will be flagged up and have to be checked and scanned again. He told me that they wouldn't be confiscated, but if you want to get through quickly it's better to put them in the see-through bag.

I fly a lot with hand luggage only (only London/Belfast, nothing glamorous.

Where you can, pack travel sizes of necessities, all in clear plastic bag.

Limit is 100 ml, so things like sun cream are pointless, just buy when you arrive and don’t bring back again, but most makeup is WELL under the limit. Just keep everything in a clear plastic bag that you can deal with quickly and easily.

Buying new things in Duty Free always nice, but you still have to bring them back through on return journey...

I’ve had an aptamil carton confiscated (200 ml) and a Laura Geller powder was flagged by system as a problem for some reason. And also once a ludicrous complaint that my plastic bag was “too big” - but that’s Belfast security for you

Actually not so ludicrous. There is a limit on the size of the plastic bag which is approx 20cm x 20cm. Otherwise you could take unlimited liquids as long as they were in 100ml or less bottles which would defeat the object of having a limit.

I flew out of Manchester 2 weeks ago and they are extremely strict on hand luggage. Mascara needs to go in the bag, balm cleanse too. You had to take out all electrical items over 20cm in length, so any hair straighteners or blow driers for screening.
If anything is unclear on the screening, it is up to 30 minutes delay for a manual check and the budget airlines are a longer walk from security. Allow enough time to get through.
Powders, whether pressed or loose, are fine. Muji is great for little pots and bottles. Travalo for perfume. Felt tip liners don't go in the bag, gel pots do. All lipsticks, chapsticks, glosses, cream shadow, cream blush, liquid or cream or stick foundation go in the bag. BB Art Sticks or similar don't. All pencils are ok, pencil sharpeners don't need to go into the bag. Nor do tweezers. Buy stuff airside at Boots or use up your samples.
Strangely soaked pad products like makeup remover pads and sheet masks do not count as liquid, but Marmite and Vegemite do!

I think it must depend who you get on the day- I fly on European flights approx twice a month and never have mascara or lipstick in the liquid bag, it’s never been an issue.

It's not "ludicrous", it's EU law. You are only allowed to have one 20cm x 20cm bag, so that you can't take more than one litre of liquids on board.

Take facial cleansing wipes instead of cleanser. Buy mini deo, toothpaste and face cream. Ask at your favourite make up counter for a trial size pot of your foundation. Use shower gel and soap the hotel provide. It's definitely possible with a few compromises

Lush is good for travelling-soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion bars and their tooth tablets. Is stick deodorant classed as liquid? If not I'd use that. Go on a scrounging mission round perfume counters-sample bottles are good. And counters like mac and Clinique will often give you sample pots of foundation-usually a week's supply.-just say your in the market.As is kiehls-they are quite generous with sachets-should last a weekend. Then you can fill your bag with makeup.

OP if you want to take balm cleansers and other similar skin care products...

I got them for my last trip away with only hand luggage. They’re little pots that will easy fit enough product for say 3-4 applications, and the set comes with spoons as well so you can scoop the product up and put into the pot. I used one for cleanser, one for primer, one for moisturiser, one for eye cream.. then had loads of room for all my other makeup, rather than taking the full size skin care. You could probably get away with filling one with foundation as well to save even more room?

I never put my regular lipstick in the clear bag (I would put in any lipgloss or liquid lipstick, though) - didn't realise this would be classed as a liquid! I've never been stopped for it.

I sympathise with you re Belfast security, SplatPancake. I'm well aware of the law, thanks, MongerTruffle, but they do seem to change their minds about what's acceptable. A zip up bag which had been through dozens of international and UK airports (including Belfast!) was turned down recently. You just have to stay calm and suck it up I'm afraid.

I'm Manchester too like Flinders so maybe they are extra strict as they flagged things in mine others said were fine, that said I can't be sure what exactly flagged as when I failed the check I offered up the things like lipstick and mascara and they did put them all in the plastic bag
