In all my 50 odd years, I’ve yet to find the right red lipstick. I’m happy with the lipstick I wear daily but occasionally, I want to make a statement.

I have fair skin with freckles. Judging by the “vein test” etc, I’m pretty sure I have a cool undertone. I don’t wear foundation, just a dusting of neutral powder to take any shine off (and to “set” my lipstick between coats). I have very blonde hair (naturally – but with a lot of silver coming through underneath). So I think I’m looking for a blue-toned red lipstick?

I’d like to try a cheap one first, to see if I can carry it off before taking the plunge with something better, so any and all recommendations would be welcome.

TIA Smile

I like Topshop Hazard lipstick. Only £8, and people approach me in the street to ask what it is. Or they used to, a few years back when I was cooler and living in London. Not so much now I’m a haggard old bag following a toddler around. Anyway, it stays on for ages and isn’t at all drying.

I am very pale with cool colouring and I have three I wear

Chanel pirate but it is a very deep colour and only good for evening wear with a full face of make up.

Guerlain love kiss from the kiss kiss range, this shouldn't suit me as it has a touch of coral but it is really nice on and I can wear it during the day. There are quite a few reds in this collection so worth checking out the Guerlain counter.

Elizabeth Arden Cherry Bomb (my mum got given an EA set and doesn't wear make up) can also wear during the day but in some lights looks a bit pink.

I started off with sheer reds Chubby sticks and a Diego Dallas Palma shiny lipstick from M&S and now I am more comfortable with a more solid colour.

What about Dior 999? That's a classic red.

Revlon Really Red, it's a non drying matte lipstick that I wear a lot and is a lovely shade of red (fellow cool toned person here.)

Another cool toned freckly person here, and I also wear Mac Ruby Woo.

I had an amazing urban decay one - it was great but using a brush changed my life.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 22/03/2018 07:14

Ohyesiam, Chanel 54 is Boy, which is neutral, 84 is a red, I wonder if you mixed them up.

OP, I would go to Chanel, Bobbi Brown or Nars. They are the best for reds, with lots of different formulations and shades.

Having said that, my new favourite red is Clinique Lip Powder in 03.

I mix ruby woo with the creamier ‘Mac Red’ for the perfect red lipstick

Rimmel - Mayfair Red Lady
Rimmel - Diva Red
L'oreal - Red passion 297

I have Mac ruby woo and Russian red and love them. I also buy Catrice red lipsticks which are much much cheaper and I actually think they are great. Worth a look. Not sure what shade in red it is though.

Almahart · 22/03/2018 14:05

Nars dragon girl is a very flattering red. It’s a crayon thingy. Ruby Woo is a bit much on me, too matte I think
