Taming tufty hair growing back after baby

I had a baby 11 months ago and had the usual hair falling out when she was a few months old. It's all growing back now which I know is good thing but it looks ridiculous. It sticks out all over my hair line about an inch or two long in weird tufts of baby hair and refuses to be tamed. My hair is shoulder length and not in the best condition after I home dyed it a few times when dd was new. I can't wear it down to hide it without straightening it for ages as it's quite fluffy and frizzy but the heat styling doesn't help the condition- I'm tempted to cut it all off but I would probably regret this as I have thick wavy hair and a round face. I had a trim a few weeks ago a few cm off the length and the hairdresser wasn't very helpful and just said everyone gets it after a baby. My current usual pony tail emphasises the tuftiness. How did everyone else cope with post baby tufty hair?
