Rab jackets - is there a cheaper alternative of similar quality?

I’m after a down jacket mainly to throw on for nipping our and also for colder evenings when camping in summer. I already have a great winter parka and thinner waterproofs so it’s really all about the warmth.

I’ve seen a lovely Rab coat for £110 and it’s very lightweight so I don’t look like the Michelin Man. Will it be worth the investment or are there cheaper alternatives that are just as good?

It’s worth it.

Ran jackets are worth the investment, and seldom reduced by much. I have one that is about 20 years old. They are not as good as when they were made by Rab Carringtin himself, in his garage in Sheffield, but still higher end outdoor kit.

Have s google of the jacket name and see if anyone has them reduced at all - maybe an old colour or odd size - and also check Amazon and Go Outdoors. I think Millets is on Quidco too.

Failing all that, have a look at Alpkit. Their stuff is not quite as refined as Rab, but still very good.

£110 is not a bad price for a down jacket at all though.

I bought a Rab coat (not down) almost three years ago. I paid about £100 in the sale. If you looked at that in terms of price per year it's probably now cost me around 20p per wear and it's still in good condition. Totally worth it!

I have a Jack Wolfskin one and tbh I’m not that impressed with it. Its warmbut i find the down in the sleeves a bit thin on the ground. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Should have gone for Rab but that was £170. My JW was £100 in the sale.

I have a Rab (neutrino..so the bigger puffy one) and it's about 6 years old now and still my 'go to'in really cold weather.

The only thing I have found as it has aged is that feathers do escape from the seams now and again..I have a slight snag on one pocket and feathers creep out! Having said that it cost about £200 and I have worn it to death so good value.

I have an 'own brand' one too and it's not anywhere near as good.
