i'm mid 40s and i have never really worn clothes tucked in - im not sure if its because i think my arse is too big *(i'm a 14-16 on the bottom, 5 ft 7)

how do i 'get past' it? i want to look smarter? any hints or tips?

Tuck in the front and leave the back out, or slightly longer!

Mid 40's, so you were young when grunge and stuff was popular? Tucking in was what the preppy girls did? Maybe this isn't you but this was me. I'm 5'7" and a 12/14 and tucking in is the only way to show my waste but I had to fight the rules of my youth and still feel like a bit of an idiot doing it but I know it looks better! I do sometime leave a bit un-tucked a a nod to the past.

definitely tick in around the front between pockets - not totally in at front and then out at back. i do this when i wear jeggings due to wanting give myself a bit of shape but not wanting to show my rolls and muffin top at the top of my square (ish) rear.
