Anyone done the 'Mumsnet haircut' recently?

I desperately need a haircut and really can't be arsed with going to a hairdresser, nor the cost.

Can anyone advise if I'll be making a grave mistake? Or any successful attempts and tips on how to do it?

Shoulder length bob, no fringe, lots of split ends.....

Do it do it do it Wine

MikeUniformMike · 15/03/2018 21:23

I wouldn't. A bob is pretty difficult to cut. I would just tie it back or up.

ChishandFips33 · 15/03/2018 22:05

I hate going to the hairdressers so I do it every 8 wks or so!

I figure it can't look any worse than the current tatty ends etc and always get comments on the layering

Hair is longer though - bra strap length, fairly fine

MinnieMousse · 15/03/2018 22:08

I did it for about a year. It looked fine until I mis-positioned my hair one time and cut it way too short at the front. It took about 2 months to grow into something presentable. I learned my lesson and found a mobile hairdresser who comes round every couple of months and cuts my hair for £14.

I haven't been to a hairdresser in years. Last few years I guess I've been doing the MN haircut. But! But! I have long hair so mistakes are forgivable. Not sure I would attempt with a bob. Think you need the real deal, sorry.

I did the Mumsnet haircut, if we’re talking about the same thing, about 15 years ago. Best haircut I’ve ever had, hands down Grin

missmouse101 · 15/03/2018 22:17

I did it a few times and loved it. I only found that after a few times, the back needed a proper haircut, but it looks so nice when you first do it. Definitely go for it!

Youcallthatgreen · 15/03/2018 22:20

Is this when you put it in a pineapple pony?
I've done it, was OK but I do have low hair standards!
I'd say go for it. Worse case scenario you have to go to the HD and get it cut shorter.

caseymoo · 15/03/2018 22:23

Can someone explain what a Mumsnet haircut is please

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 15/03/2018 22:27

Can’t imagine it would work on a bob. I think it needs the length to get good layers.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 15/03/2018 22:32

Casey, it’s a method of cutting a layered look by putting it in a high/front pony tail and chopping into the ends, then voila, you end up with one of these haircuts, depending on how well you do it.

I wouldn't!

At least on long hair, you can cut them shorter to rectify the problem.

missmouse101 · 16/03/2018 07:44

It was the Lee Stafford DIY haircut. Should be some videos if you google that. It does work if you follow the instructions! Quite amazingly really! I used to do it a lot and it was fine. Smile

chuffnstuff · 16/03/2018 07:58

I should have said, I do have layers! Will google the videos and see if I'm brave enough.

I have long hair and have been cutting my own hair this way for a few years now. Brush carefully, position the pony right at the front on your parting, and don't take too much off

LuxuryWoman2017 · 16/03/2018 12:04

I did mine last week, but didn't do the Unicorn ponytail chop as I didn't want layers, I did the low ponytail at the back to take an inch of the ends - got someone just to snip any straggly hairs I missed and it's pretty good I must say. I did do the layered one a few years ago but wasn't so keen, it did work well but didn't suit my hair

missmouse101 · 17/03/2018 16:38

Did you do it OP? Pics if so! 😀
