A prom dress, but not as we know it

Hello Lovely S+B MNers.

DD is 16 and will have her school prom this year. She lives in the same pair of jeans day in and out until I prise them off her to wash.

She wants to wear a dress for prom - she wants it to be special and different, but doesn't want it to be too dressy. I think she wants to look quirky.

For her b.day in Nov she did a murder mystery and wore a 20s style flapper dress (which I thought looked amazing), and when I suggested that style again, she considered she'd already done that.

Any ideas? She's 5'11 and a size 10. Pretty flat-chested.

Have a look at www.lindybop.co.uk they have a lot of retro, quirky, vintage style dresses. I have a few from there and they always get compliments and I rarely see anyone at the same event in something similar.

My prom dress from was Blue Banana and very quirky/alternative.

She would look amazing in a tux with that figure

Thank you for these suggestions. I LOVED Blue Banana, and she quite liked it. She liked the Tux idea, but was a bit scared-y about it.

Her bf has sent her an image of a red satin dress. V low cut (I think FAR too low - I think she'd find it uncomfortable and would feel too self conscious. You couldn't wear a bra with it!). It's also very short (fine) and very flared skirt (fitted top).

Now, I haven't said this to her, but I don't think very short and very flared suits her terribly well. She's got v v long, skinny legs.

I have told her I think a fitted dress would look amazing on her figure.

Luckily the dress she likes is in America, so would take ages to get here, and problems if it then doesn't fit.
She's gone out to her sport, and will be a couple of hours. I'm googling, for something in the UK, but not very successfully.

Can anyone recommend red, satin, short?

Please, please. I'm putting my faith in Style and Beauty. You've never let me down yet, but I've only got a couple of hours....

Charlie Brown do absolutely amazing dresses. I had one for my formal. I still have it in the back of my closet. I’n Not sure that you can get them here though.

What about something ‘safe’ but with a bit of a twist? The back on this is rather different and only someone small boobed could get away without a bra...?

Or the other thing, super beautiful on a tall slim figure would be a long red silk cheongsam. I can only dream of fitting in one!!

Ooh, some of these are good! www.missguided.co.uk/dresses/cocktail dresses

Oh yes - a cheongsam! Would look amazing with her height.

I had one custom made for about £60 through a Chinese website. It was long with a halter neck in a gorgeous red and gold pattern. Always had lots of complements when I wore it. That was 12 years before 2 kids and wouldn't get it over my hips now! #wistful

If you’re on the south coast you could try Belle Ella - huge range of amazing prom dresses.

When I say cheongsam I mean something like this (random internet pic) it would look VERY cool!

What about a wide leg jumpsuit? Or a two piece dress?

LemonysSnicket · 15/03/2018 21:33

Although unless she is Asian I wouldn’t wear a cheongsam ....
