As the username suggests, I have reddish hair.

I am also going white. Only a little at a time, but starting to get noticable down the sides.

After a very short haircut, I decided to 'treat' myself to a Clairol Nice 'n Easy box colour. 8WR - Golden Auburn. Slightly lighter than my natural hair colour and covers grey well.

I also dyed my eyebrows with a different type of dye. Brown.

However, two things happened.

  1. I got a bit distracted and left both sets of dye in for longer than the recommended time.

I have covered the grey superbly. And any hint of any natural hair colour.

I look like I'm wearing Russ Abbott's Glaswegian Jimmy wig! It fucking glows in the dark! 😨😨😨

Also, my thick and luxuriant eyebrows are a dark shade of blackish-brown. 😱😱😱

  1. My hairline and scalp came out in a rash that matched the Clairol dye perfectly.

I know what this means and, having a capacity to allergies, have been waiting for something like this to happen for some time.

I have more than likely become sensitized to paraphenylenediamine and have to stop using it.

Does that mean I can never dye my hair again?

If you're allergic to normal dyes, what do you use?

Have you heard of the new Nice n Easy box dyes that have been launched for people with PPD allergies?

www.clairol.com/en-GB/products/hair-color/product/nice-n-easy?shadeSKU=8699568527160

Says there is still risk of some allergy but chances are reduced.

If you are prone to allergies you really need to make sure you do a patch test first

Permanent colour in 54 natural-looking shades. Breakthrough innovation ME+ formula reduces the risk of developing an allergy for people without existing allergies. Severe reactions may still occur.

*+Reduces damage compared to our permanent hair colour without EDDS

**ME+ is a revolutionary hair dye molecule that better protects people without hair dye allergy by reducing the chance of developing one. If you have a known hair dye allergy, do not use this product unless approved by your dermatologist. Severe reactions may still occur.

Thanks, but the blurb isn't reassuring. 😕
