Agree completely with PPs' ridicule for the Sunday Times "Style" section. One of their regular forays into the unwearable. Not even gorgeous models could make any of it appealing.

SlightlyTired · 05/03/2018 13:59

Could not agree more about the Sunday Times Style magazine. It is always laughable but they really outdid themselves this weekend. Did you see the Wardrobe Mistress article on how to master smart casual? Wear a denim jacket over a white dress with black polka dots that closely resembles a hospital gown, teamed with your dad’s office shoes (no socks, natch). The model looked like she had discharged herself in a hurry after an operation.

I like kitten heels, I'm 5'10" and don't want a high stiletto. Normally I prefer wedges (or Cuban heels, so am probably beyond help), but wedges don't cut it for dressyness, hence the kittens.

I love wearing cropped wide leg trousers (I actually think it is a flattering look on almost everyone), and am looking for a pair of platform brogues. Preferably silver. Blame Trinny.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 06/03/2018 07:54

Oh, I missed the Times fashion bit

Love to despair at it

It is actually hard to dress well....

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 06/03/2018 09:45

@theftbyfinding I love that mac!

CuckooCuckooClock · 06/03/2018 10:03

No no no.
Cropped wide legs look awful on me. It's the cankles.
Love them on other people and am always envious of other women's lovely slim ankles but on me no way.

0ccamsRazor · 06/03/2018 10:18

I love trench coats, I have a matrix inspired black leather full length one, a full circle/princess styled modula one (can be worn without sleeves and rain splash back) in a slate blue and a serious waterproof one in a smokey blue. I am a size 10, but I think that I would still wear trenches if I was bigger.

Kitten heals I can't get on with, at 5ft 10 I prefer a high heel. There is no disguising my height so I embrace it.

Cropped trousers look silly on me, my legs are very slender and crops look like I have grown out of them. Clumpy brogues make me look like a clown. I really don't like the latest fashion of ruffles or frou frou as my grandad would say on clothing or pussy bows.

theftbyfinding · 06/03/2018 12:06

I always feel like Max Wall in clumpy brogues too, have slim legs and they make my feet look enormous. The Telegraph fashion page is as bad as the Sunday Times. Would love a chance to edit that page for a few weeks! In the days when old Bill Deedes was the editor, it was a different story.

What an odd thread.

Err when did trench coats go OUT of fashion? Must have missed the memo! It’s a good work wardrobe staple in Spring/Autumn and looks good on both tall, curvy and petite frames, as long as the size is right.

Similarly, kittens have never really been in or out of fashion. They are a classic heel type that either suits you or doesn’t. You either like or don’t like. It’s good to have the choice of heel height as a tall lady. I have some Rainbow club strappy black kitten heels that I wear with cocktail dresses. They’re pretty and timeless.

LibertyBlue · 06/03/2018 12:39

These are my kitten heels. Not the height of fashion, but a good option for black tie. I wouldn’t wear them everyday obviously!

My trench coat is from Protected Species - highly recommended as it’s so comfortable, 100% waterproof and I look fab in it Wink

RoseWhiteTips · 06/03/2018 14:07

Yes, trench coats and kitten heels are classic and are above mere fashion.

InSisu · 06/03/2018 14:12

Kitten heels have been highly unfashionable for a long time, which is why they are only slowly becoming mainstream again. I remember them being on trend when I was 12 and I coveted a pair in Tammy Girl.
Trenches on the other hand are regarded as a classic.

theftbyfinding · 06/03/2018 14:53

Zara has sold kitten heels, lots of, for the past decade at least. Pretty mainstream I'd say. I think fashion editors just try to push the separate pieces we all like in one bizarre package. The wide-legged cutoffs with kitten heels look suits someone tall and slender more than a short, curvy woman. I guess fashion pages can't be all things to all shapes but they could focus a little more on different body types than tall, androgynous model looks.

InSisu · 06/03/2018 14:58

I haven't seen any in Zara over the last 10 years other than the more recent sock boot offerings or on a pointed sling back.

theftbyfinding · 06/03/2018 15:00

They do stock them, I buy them. I do tend to buy the kitten heeled sling backs rather than courts.

dontcallmelen · 06/03/2018 15:45

I like trench coats, but they always seem to swamp me to much fabric I think, I’m four foot ten & love a kitten heel I have very small feet & have a very petite frame, the wide leg crop trousers look ridiculous on me far to short I think to carry it off.
