Tutter I agree re wrap dresses as they can emphasise no waist, but I think with tops less so because you are divided up ie different top and bottom half.
The ones I found ok are the ones with ruching at the side/s, as this gives an appearance of a waist.
I remember a flattering wedding dress I tried was one with lots of side ruching which made me look as if I went in lots at the middle.
I also have some mock wrap dresses with side ruching which look good.
But as said I am not a true column, too big on the hips so what works for me prob not quite the same.

No, I agree, wrap dresses make me despair. Sack of tatties. Try them on for a laugh sometimes.

But somehow if you pair a wrap top (NB I was told NOT to pull it down but to let it make loose swathed sideways folds if you can see what I mean) with column-y trousers or skirt there is a nice contrast.

Jigsaw can be very good - haven't bought anything from there for a few years, but they used to do a certain cut of side-zipped soft wool trousers which were really nice. Side-zips in general I aim for.

Liberty is worth having a look in, as the sculpted Japanese-inspired sort of things they have (eg Oska) works well for the long neck/broad shoulders/no boobs top shape.

agree re jigsaw trousers - used to egt all my work trews from there

think we may have overdone the desc of broad shoulders (am no duncan goodhew) and narrow hips (not that narrow - they're just not big hips)

yes - the fact is there ain't no triangles going on in the Column Clique at all, so giving the faintest illusion of one (which is the max possible) is a triumph

Tutter · 03/05/2007 14:45

exactly, bink

column, ladies, think column, not triangle

Bink · 03/05/2007 14:51

oh - another unexpected source - Muji - if you like slightly severe gamine things

I look AWFUL in boxy tops, bit like a bloke in fact!
Halter necks not bad is true as long as not too tight around torso...
I have discovered that feminine clothes such as empire line dresses and A line skirts look good on me, perhaps making me look less straight and more womanly, but I am def not triangle as my hips and shoulders are same width.
Thanks for the tips all, makes interesting reading.
Cant wait to have this baby and be able to wear proper clothes again....

peachygirl · 04/05/2007 16:56

I got some of these last year and they are still great.mands
They have elastic at the back (I know that will be frowned upon by the fashion queens of mumsnet) and are very comfy.
I also got a pair for £10 at matalan recently and they are OK too

NotanOtter · 04/05/2007 17:50

any joy PeteyFan?

I am not sending these back just yet but am sure there must be some better ones....

Idreamofdaleks · 04/05/2007 19:29

I am something of a column too! I have broadish and attractive shoulders, small norks, no waist, slim hips, a jelly tummy and nice long legs!

I am a big fan of:
halternecks, esp swimsuits
empire line dresses
wrapover or tie tops which stop under the bust
layering deep v necks with something underneath so as not to be too revealing
I have a great tunic top from monsoon which I wear with straight jersey trousers underneath
I also bought this sundress which looks great

are boden ones slimish round thigh?

SilentTerror · 04/05/2007 21:16

The Next ones look awful on me after an hour or so.Make my bottom look like it has sunk to the floor! Feel frumpy in them to be honest. The Marks ones are better, amd can I recommend Principles and Wallis for linen trousers.Pricier(about £30 - £40) but fit better .

NotanOtter · 04/05/2007 21:25

thanks will look!

hoxtonchick · 04/05/2007 21:30

i got good ones in orange & fabulous bright green from h&m last year. this year's are from primark - cheap & cheerful but really quite acceptable.
