he gives the impression that they aren’t too many ‘hands on’ Dad’s out there

I think the majority of his followers are women who find the idea of a father looking after his children whilst the mother is out working a real novelty and something that is to be applauded. There is an awful lot of 'I just spat my coffee out whilst reading this because you are sooooo hilarious!" comments which is cringe worthy in itself as his moments are clearly so staged. There are quite a few instadads doing this now and it's all a tad try hard.

I find MOD to be authentic because she posts general stuff as well as snippets from her home life but FOD has just built his brand around the dd's which surely isn't going to last long. The twins will be too tall for the feet dangling thing or putting them into plastic containers in Homebase.

nipersvest · 13/03/2018 10:28

My kids are 16 and 13, absolutely no way either would let me post them on instagram.

Fruitbowl2 · 13/03/2018 10:36

I think you're right Tether, Claudia W's article was spot on. We are probably all a bit guilty of the endless pic taking instead of being in the moment.

The instas that are for a 'purpose' feel ok - the fashion/interiors etc. They are what they say on the tin, but the MOD/FOD 'I have a new house so I'm going to hint I need advice on x y z to get free stuff' is just icky, especially as it has developed from a real thing people respect, midwifery.

Fruitbowl2 · 13/03/2018 10:40

My kids are younger nipersvest and they no longer want to be on my Socialmedia - they are so savvy from school about safety on line.

nipersvest · 13/03/2018 10:47

Fearne Cotton has a good policy with regards to Instagram and children, her kids appear but she’s never shown their faces. Back of the head is as much as you’ll see, commendable to retain that bit of privacy.

magickingdom82 · 13/03/2018 11:05

Who's this Clemmie MOD woman, sorry I'm so late to the party on this one - nothing worse than passive aggressive affirmation posts by a grown woman (yesterday's instagram). What a twirp.

Itsautumn · 13/03/2018 11:16

Mytherher- I feel the same. I have unfollowed most of the instamums. What started out as a bit of light relief and browsing turned into constant comparison and just wanting a load of ‘stuff’ all the time. The relentless consumerism is just too much.
I follow a couple of the more fashion focussed ones for a bit of inspiration but I don’t even check Instagram every day now. The difference it has made to my mood is really noticeable.
I also found a lot of the accounts are very similar, lots of repetition of the same clothes and products and I’ve become a bit bored with it all.
I wonder how sustainable their business model is. As most accounts are now just ads basically the originality has been lost.

mytether · 13/03/2018 11:29

Hello itsautumn, glad it's not just me. It's a conflict really because I am shallow enough to admit that 'stuff' does sometimes make me happy. I love clothes and feel as though an interest in fashion is sometimes considered a pretty trivial hobby compared, say, to an interest in football. Which could in fact be equally trivial and expensive (although perhaps not generally the same cost to the environment).

But I don't want to be constantly wanting more stuff and that's what these Instamums do to me. I've decided to use pinterest for specific outfit inspiration and so that I use more of my existing wardrobe. That doesn't mean that I will never go shopping again, just that I hope to do so in a slightly more mindful way.

I do agree with the sustainability of the business model. It will be interesting to see.

Fruitbowl2 · 13/03/2018 11:35

You always know people have lost the plot once they start on the passive aggressive 'you've got this' posts Grin

PavlovaPrincess · 13/03/2018 11:52

You're right easypeasy but I hate this 'woah, I'm a man, I've no idea what I'm doing with kids' schtick that FOD promotes. Especially when I suspect that he's actually quite the opposite.

It's buys into this stereotype that all men are incompetent idiots when it comes to childcare so they should get a free pass and a medal just because they're doing the bare minimum.

nipersvest · 13/03/2018 12:04

FOD's biggest fan is himself, or at least that's how he comes across. He may not be the same at home. He's been a bit quiet on stories since his adhd faux pas, I wonder if his book publisher has given him a ticking off too, it was a bit of an own goal.

Fruitbowl2 · 13/03/2018 12:10

I first came across FOD and MOD in a grazia mag article where he described himself and MOD as the posh and Becks of instagram. Says it all really 😂

magickingdom82 · 13/03/2018 13:18

"Raising little humans"
"You got this mama"
F---.Right.Off.

Jjpeston · 13/03/2018 13:38

@ElspethFlashman @mytether I've also seen Mother Pukka show a lot of messy kitchen pics with a lot of honesty about not getting round to doing the dishes etc. I think she had some pretty bleak/ difficult times after the second baby and was quite open about that which was really helpful.

Jjpeston · 13/03/2018 13:42

@Fruitbowl2 I remember reading that. I've also heard him actually describe himself as funny too on a podcast. It's just cringe - the irony is it's pretty humourless to think you're funny. I don't think even comedians do. And I get the impression a lot of the 'oh my god you're sooo hilarious' posters on his feed are young women who are just a little bit in love with him or don't have kids of their own. I think anyone with toddlers will think their own kids are funnier / cuter anyway - no?

magickingdom82 · 13/03/2018 13:44

One of the first things I read on MODs instagram was a reference to the nanny. Says it all, and the husband still struggles with childcare? Bullshit.

mytether · 13/03/2018 13:44

Maybe I should have a look at that too. I do want to emphasise that I didn't mean to pick on Erica Davies, as I said she does seem really lovely. I just think her standards of what counts as 'mess' might be quite different from mine.

ElspethFlashman · 13/03/2018 13:52

Oh yes, MP also has a cupboard of doom in her kitchen which is so packed with shite she can barely close it. I appreciated seeing that! I have a cloakroom and the best thing I can say about it is that it has a door that shuts tightly.

Steph from dontbuyherflowers also always has a reassuring amount of clothes drying on a vast clothes horse in her kitchen too, I seem to remember.

Thats the content I want to see! Mess! Grin

ElspethFlashman · 13/03/2018 14:00

I (vaguely) follow thedadnetwork who seems to be one of the few blokes who don't make a big deal out of the actual parenting bit, cos hes a SAHP.

Maybe thats the difference - if you're at home with them all the time you just get on with it.

To add to "raising little humans" can I please add "in these little squares" as an Insta-cliche that can die now, please?

anyalovesrose · 13/03/2018 14:09

magickingdom82

We use to have a nanny when we lived in London when I was writing my second book they now go to nursery as I felt they’d benefit more from interacting with other children and to encourage their language (apparently twins are often later with speaking)

magickingdom82 · 13/03/2018 14:19

anyalovesrose - are you MOD? Sorry I've not followed whole thread, your and your husbands accounts are all new to me.
Is this your career, full time instagrammers? If so, I have a tonne of questions I'm dying to ask you...

magickingdom82 · 13/03/2018 14:21

I guess instagram divides people.
Those who are impressed by what they see, find it all hilarious and are desperate to copy and emulate what they see.
And those that think it's utter narcissistic drivel. Albeit compulsive car crash viewing.

anyalovesrose · 13/03/2018 14:21

magickingdom82

Yup 👋🏼 I’m a midwife and writer I do this in the side, Simon is a management consultant and also does his IG in his spare time

magickingdom82 · 13/03/2018 14:24

How much spare time does he have exactly?! It looks like he puts his life and soul into his instagram (from what I've seen so far). Is he paid to provide that content?

anyalovesrose · 13/03/2018 16:05

Just enough
