Interview outfit

Please could you hep with an interview outfit. I have a Hobbs dress which I bought a couple of years ago for a memorial service and have only worn once. It is this dress

but I have to say this is not a very flattering photo of it as it is much slimmer and longer (to the knee) than it appears in this link. It is a very flattering, smart dress. The only problem is, it is 93% silk - does this make it too posh for an interview for quite an average office job?

Also, would it be ok to wear with black opaques?

And, as it has an elbow length sleeve and I have no decent coat, I was planning on buying a black jacket to go with it. Can anyone suggest one for me?

Yes, it seems a little busy for an interview. Something plain and inexpensive that you can wear with opaques and your own blouse/shirt under perhaps? This is £22 from Sainsbury's Tu.

With a black jacket and black opaques, it'd be fine for an interview unless you're going somewhere super-serious like a law firm.

Patterns are a nogo? Nobody told me...or any of then people who interviewed me and gave me the job!!

I think it’s 2018 and people tend not tk be so stuffy about what you wear as long as it’s suitable.

But saying that it’s the silk I would say was not ok rather than the pattern.

It would depend on the job. I’d wear it if it was a non corporate organisation. I think a black jacket would make it suitable for an interview and there are lots in M and S if you don’t want Hobbs prices. LK Bennett have a great black peplum jacket in their sale at the moment which might be worth a look if that style suits you. Black shoes and bag would look great.

I’m not a fan of opaque tights for an interview. A bit clunky!

Thanks for the comments. If it is not to be this dress, then I will need new everything, which I would rather not have to do. Even with that dress you linked to Diana I would have to buy a shirt, new shoes, either a jacket or a coat....

I was hoping the black jacket would tone everything down. Yes, the silk bit worried me too. It is not very silk looking. I didn't realise it was silk until I checked the label tbh, but knowing it now, it does worry me.

How shiny is it? I worn black opaque tights to every interview, I don’t know how they could be described as “clunky”.

Unless it’s obvioysly really shiny or slinky, I’d wear it with a black blazer/cardigan, black tights and black shoes. Patterns are fine.

No, not shiny or slinky at all. Tbh, it comes across more like a fine manmade fibre.

In that case, just wear it. No one will check your label!
