Should I go for the chop????

I’m getting my hair done next week. It’s not looking great (not been done for 6 months). I always have my hair long and have the hairdresser do balayage (blonde) in with my natural colour (red).

I’m considering getting quite a lot off. I did it once when I was 20, I’m 29 now. I really, really regretted it last time but I’m a lot older now. What should I do? Am I having a moment of madness? Please help!

My hair is about your length and I'm about to go for the chop. It takes forever to dry, and makes me so hot at the gym. I'm focused on losing the last stone, through some serious exercise, so can't be dealing with long long hair holding me back! I've got serious undercut envy when I see some women at the gym, but not quite prepared to go that far.

It will grow back.

FauxFox · 09/02/2018 14:45

Do you braid it ever? There are loads of amazing styles you could do with all that lovely hair and it doesn't take long to learn with the wonder of YouTube...

I would cut it off to get rid of the dyed bits and grow your natural hair in.

Personally I think your hair is too ‘Mormon wife’ and needs a more fashionable style.

CountFosco · 09/02/2018 16:42

Agree with the last 2 posts that you need to do things with long hair, either braiding or up in a more or less messy bun. I love the curls in your second photo but if you do nothing or just put it in a ponytail that's very dull and gives off a 'hippy who doesn't care about their appearance' vibe. Whereas even something simple like pigtails or a simple bungives a better message.

swimminginthesea · 10/02/2018 17:12

It's actually hard to say if it suits you without seeing your face. I think your hair looks pretty but I'd cut about a foot off - I think really long hair needs to be quite a lot thicker and more textured to look amazing, otherwise it looks a bit lank and just drags your face down.

I don't like it curled tbh - I think that princessy look is looking quite dated. It's aging. I wouldn't go for a bob but I think having it a bit shorter would make it look fresher and more modern. Even with a foot off it would still be properly long.

SheelaNaGiggle · 10/02/2018 17:16

I think the photo with the curled hair is quite dated too. Like an X Factor contestant in 2009. I wouldn't go short but I'd cut a few inches off. It will give your hair more movement.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 10/02/2018 17:20

Cut it to boob length. It’s a bit too long.

ShuttyTown · 10/02/2018 17:27

Don't understand the posts saying it's amazing and lustrous and wonderful and gorgeous! It's nice enough and a lovely length but it's just straight, flat and not particularly thick.

Sorry if that sounds mean OP, you do have nice hair and I like the length, and for what it's worth I spend hours in a week trying to get my wavy hair to go straight and flat so I don't dislike your hair at all! I was just amazed at all the over the top comments!

QueenOfSpades6 · 10/02/2018 17:35

My hair is extremely thick so the picture can’t be doing it justice. To the point I’ve had 3 people dying it at the hairdressers before and they always say it’s very thick hair. The curled pic is from a few years ago. I use a cloud 9 curling wand now which gives me looser waves. I have hardly any pics of me (don’t like having my pic taken) I’ll see if I can find any others. My hair doesn’t look good in the first pic at all as I’ve not had it cut for 6 months and it grows extremely fast so it’s way too long just now.

A picture from about a month or so after the last time it was coloured. It’s tied up but I think you can see it’s thick hair.

Don’t agree withShittyTown - lovely thickness of hair

usernameunavailable · 10/02/2018 17:57

Dont do it!

SukiTheDog · 10/02/2018 18:30

No. Please leave it as is. Trims, when necessary.

SheelaNaGiggle · 10/02/2018 18:36

Do it.

EmmaC78 · 10/02/2018 18:42

I like it long to but would say take 3-4 inches of the end to make it blunter at the bottom and take away some of the weight.

Frankiewears · 10/02/2018 18:44

Definitely cut it off.

Charismam · 10/02/2018 18:46

Do it!!

I go from short to long every five years. Love the drama of change!

Frankiewears · 10/02/2018 18:49

Hello..

Should I go for the chop????
SheelaNaGiggle · 10/02/2018 18:52

Frankie that photo makes me feel a bit queasy. Are they some kind of surrendered wives growing their hair for God as well as their shared husband?

swimminginthesea · 10/02/2018 18:52

Still doesn't look particularly thick to me - perhaps the length is pulling it down. As I said before, i think it would look more modern and swishy if it were a bit shorter. It looks fine though and I'm only commenting because you asked the question. I have the feeling you like it as it is, and it's your hair, so do what you want with it!

swimminginthesea · 10/02/2018 18:53

Frankie - urghhhhhhhh

midsomermurderess · 10/02/2018 18:58

I’d say yes, it just looks a bit lank and dull.

QueenOfSpades6 · 10/02/2018 19:02

I hate it as it is in the first pic. Way too long and the colours faded, just doesn’t look good at all just now. And yes, the weight of it just now is making it very flat. I like it when it’s been cut but just bored of it really. It’s not that course texture which can give hair the appearance of being very thick. My hair is soft but very thick, which gives it more of a sleek look rather than someone whose hair is of a wiry texture which will look almost bushy.

What exactly is it you're asking? When you talk about the "chop", how short are you honestly considering going? Six inches is no big deal, no one would even notice. Have you got photos of hairstyles you're thinking about?

I have very thick hair; it's fine and wavy but not coarse or wiry - it looks very different to yours around my face though. (I don't particularly like my hair, just saying.)

If yours really is actually thick and looks like that because of the length, I'd definitely cut it.

Estellanpip · 10/02/2018 19:16

Yes, it's just 'hair' not really doing anything as it is. I would get a good bit taken off and updated, as you're asking!
My hair is quite thick, the individual strands are quite fine but there are a lot of them so I know what you mean.
