Wrap dresses, whats that about?

Is the idea that the wrap dress is universally flattering for women? Is that why its always touted as a classic piece? Do you wear them?

Who does good ones?

I'm tall and slim with small boobs and wide hips. They look awful on me (or at least I feel super self-conscious in them) because I feel they just accentuate my hips and thighs.

iMatter · 08/02/2018 19:42

Hate them.

Matronly, bosomly and I've never seen anyone look good in one.

redexpat · 08/02/2018 19:59

The only brand Ive found that fits me is boden. I got a green and blue patterned one in the clearance for less than 30 quid! I have a slip underneath for warmth. If you have a bit of a belly or are prone to bloating then i find the faux wrap ones with ruching are more flattering.

Funkyhouse · 08/02/2018 20:14

I got rid of all mine. They make my boobs look huge. I don’t find them flattering at all and used to be self-conscious if I was at a meeting in one and lent over as it felt like everything would come flopping out.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 08/02/2018 20:44

@HuskyMcClusky

How do you know?

KatharinaRosalie · 08/02/2018 21:49

Faux wraps work for me, but proper wrap dresses make me look 'Here's my chest, the rest is coming'

afrikat · 08/02/2018 22:07

I live in wrap dresses. The most flattering shape for my figure by far

verite · 09/02/2018 12:14

I like wrap dresses. I am very hourglass though so have to be careful they are not too va va voom! Diane Von furstenberg are the best - especially the older styles that were silk jersey.

rightknockered · 09/02/2018 14:18

I like them, as long as I'm standing still. The moment I take a step though, wahey

redmarkone · 09/02/2018 14:25

they look shocking on me. i have love handles on my hips and no waist so i look like a brick too. honestly, they look dreadful even in pregnancy.

barefoofdoctor · 10/02/2018 14:47

Yes to a good silk wrap dress Coast/Issa/LKBennet or DVH. Best to wear a petticoat for a streamlined look and in case a boob tries to make a run for it. An easy super feminine look for comfort lovers slobs like me and canm be dressed up or down.
I've needed understood this in/out fashion crap. If a style suits you stick to it! (Fan of boot cut jeans/pashminas/cashmere onesies and maxi dresses which a bit like wrap dresses make most people look glam).

MrsJoshDun · 10/02/2018 17:53

I’ve just bought this looks nice on.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/02/2018 18:01

Very 90's!

MrsJoshDun · 10/02/2018 18:04

What the one I just bought or wrap dresses in general?

Mumsnut · 10/02/2018 20:07

I like them; they suit my shape (hourglass). DvF are the best by far - or were. It's all gone a bit Per Una over there at the mo.

Patricia123456 · 11/02/2018 05:19

O no NJ no BH hi

Thursdaydreaming · 11/02/2018 06:01

Don't like them personally, I have larger boobs and wrap dresses make them look saggy and also tend to gape open.

ElanorGamgee · 11/02/2018 06:06

I have six of the Hobbs ones, love them for work.

Peartree17 · 11/02/2018 21:23

I have (blush) four DVF silk jersey wrap dresses. Beautiful prints and they make me feel smokin' hot. These days I prefer to dress them right down though - flat shoes/sneakers, bare legs or black opaques, sleeves pushed up. Posh beach wear. Otherwise I feel a bit old-fashioned and try-hard.

endthefarts · 11/02/2018 21:45

In theory they should work on me (big boobs, hourglass shape), but I have big shoulders too and something about the big shoulders and big breasts just looks wrong in them. I always try wrap dresses and wrap tops on with such high expectations only to look horrible in them. I think they work really well for people with big boobs and small frames though.

EnidButton · 11/02/2018 22:19

I have a small frame, small waist, biggish boobs and bum and they really suit me. Don't own any anymore though as I couldn't get them to work for casual.

EnidButton · 11/02/2018 22:19

Biggish as in proportionally. 28ff isn't that big really.

Itmakesthereaderreadon · 11/02/2018 22:28

I hate fake ones. Dp claim to sell wrap dresses; they just mean the top is wrapover, which means you can't adjust to cover boobs. It's ok; I still have two proper ones from 13years ago.

Peartree17 · 12/02/2018 09:38

Oh, and I'm fairly straight up and down. Small breasts, small around the torso, relatively broad shoulders, not very roomy through the hips. The dresses give me a more womanly hourglass shape. If you're worried about gaping, try a size up and you get more fabric to wrap. I bought my first one when the DVF revival was going full swing and I tried it on in the spirit of 'what's all the fuss about?' - was surprised (and obviously pleased) by how good they make you look. The only thing that makes me a bit doubtful about them now is the length - they sit just above the knee and I'd prefer a bit more length these days. Hence I dress them down with flats and opaques rather than using them as an opportunity to get my legs out.

rubybleu · 12/02/2018 10:23

I’m a slim hourglass with broad shoulders, equal width hips and a small ribcage with modest 28E boobs. They are one of the most flattering shapes on me.
