I was told this top was "ageing", is it true?

I was shopping with my friend today and was having a look at the new stuff in Joules, as they ususally do lovely patterns.

I saw this top and immediately loved it (what a gorgeous and delicate pattern!). I said this to my friend...and she immediately said how ageing it would be. Here's the link to the top, in the cream botanicals print www.joules.com/Women/Tops/Harbour-Print/Jersey-Top/Cream-Botanicals?id=Y_HARBOURPRINT%7CCREMBOT

Is my friend right? I'm not ususally affected by stuff like this and wear what I want, but a man recently said I looked much older than I was and now I'm overthinking things. For the record, I'm 20 years old.

Any advice much appreciated 😊

At 20, styled in the right way I think that top would look totally fine! If you like it, wear it.

I'm 32 and when I look back at things I've worn in the past, I always, always look best in the outfits I genuinely loved rather than trying to fit into a certain trend.

Frankiewears · 03/02/2018 15:28

I stumbled upon this today in its rightful domain-a garden centre.

The print is very reminiscent of botanical themed blinds from the 1980s.

It is even more minging in reality.

Seriously , step away.

WatercolourFlower · 03/02/2018 15:34

I haven't bought it everyone, don't worry 😂 I went back in and tried it on today...it didn't look nice, and as a lot of people had pointed out about the Harbour tops, it was a funny shape that bunched up over my stomach - not flattering!

neveradullmoment99 · 03/02/2018 16:36

It depends upon how you wear it. If you wear it with a denim mini I think it would look cute.

RosinaAlmaviva · 03/02/2018 17:44

Sorry it didn't work out OP!

Re: the Jack Wills top, be warned that plain pastel knitwear = classic, and as namechanged said, the shape is on the mumsy side. That said, a loose cut seems to be on trend, much to my dismay as baggy tops are no friends to me - but that's another thread.

River Island have plenty of floral tops, although they tend to be winter florals with red/black/mustard backgrounds atm, as opposed to the Joules which was spring/summer. Eg this, this or this.

WatercolourFlower · 03/02/2018 17:49

I thought Jack Wills was for younger people, teenagers? Is a lot of their stuff mumsy in your opinion, or is it only the examples I have chosen! I did like a pair of their dungarees with a red baggy jumper I saw on the website. I can't afford them at the moment, but I'll save if they are more fashionable items

WatercolourFlower · 03/02/2018 17:52

@ RosinaAlmaviva Thank you for the suggestions! I really like the red one, it looks very pretty

I thinks it's lovely I've been wearing joules for10 plus years (I'm 31) I'd wear it with skinny light blue jeans, Brown Ankle boots maybe a denim jacket! If u like it, but it!

WatercolourFlower · 03/02/2018 17:54

This was the jumper I liked (although I'd only buy it with some discount off it, as its v.expensive) www.jackwills.com/brierton-ottoman-high-neck-jumper-100014396008.html#q=brierton&start=2
I'd probably wear that with a pinafore dress, dungarees, or just on its own with skinny jeans

Was lounging in front of QVC watching Fashion at 4pm today (I don't normally watch QVC but am recovering from flu...)
And that Joules top was featured Grin
You can watch the video!!!

WatercolourFlower · 03/02/2018 18:01

Haha thank you for the video ! The top was really long on me, interestingly it doesn't look that way on the model they have...the shape really didn't suit me

Any shop can have items that are unfashionable, any shop can have lovely clothes. We don't know what height and shape you are or what your colouring is like. We just know you are 20 and have a lob that you don't think is particularly flattering or fashionable. If you want to change your clothes to look younger (I agree that telling you you look 25 is intended as a compliment) or older or more edgy or whatever you need to invest the time yourself looking at magazines and instagram, reading blogs, trying on clothes in shops in different combinations. What is the image you wish to project?

Everyone has different things that are important to them when they dress themselves, you have to work out what that is for you. Some people want their clothes to be a neutral background for their personality or work (think of Steve Jobs). Some want to express their interests or beliefs or personalities through their clothes.

I think there are many of us here in our 40s. My mother was horrified at what I wore in my 20s, I dressed in black, wore ugly boots (DMs), ugly makeup, my clothing was an expression of my taste in music that she also hated. Clothing for young people in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s was very much about rebelling against our parents values and dressing completely differently to them.

I don't think that is true anymore. We've gone back to the 1950s and young women dress like old women. Money is more of an indicator of how well you dress than age. And that means that a fashionable older woman probably dresses with way more style (because of years of practice) than a young woman. So don't worry about all us parents telling you where to shop.

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 03/02/2018 18:49

37 year old mum here and I find Joules too mumsy Grin same with boden, white stuff... Give them a few decades yet!

Peanutbuttercheese · 03/02/2018 19:00

CountFosco you have a point about rebelling and clothes being out there and the full circle of very young women dressing more conservatively often these days.

When I was your age op I used to buy army surplus and alter them to fit, lots of ex East German army stuff.

RosinaAlmaviva · 03/02/2018 19:32

Had never heard of Jack Wills and at first glance it looked like another Boden. But having googled, it is indeed a Sloaney teen brand, which explains the classic/Duchess-of-Cambridge-off-duty styles.

I don't know whether the price points reflect the quality or the purchasing power of their customers. You could join the mailing list and hope to buy the jumper when it's on sale. I think it would look a lot better with skinny jeans than the skirt the model is wearing.

JaneJeffer · 03/02/2018 19:33

Wear whatever the fuck you like no matter what age, shape or weight you are. If you like it that's all that matters.

RosinaAlmaviva · 03/02/2018 20:08

Count Fosco I have always liked to wear 40s/50s vintage or retro. When I was in my teens I was dressing like my grandmother. In my 40s, I'm now dressing like a twentysomething. There must have been a golden year in my life when what I was wearing was actually age appropriate, but I can't quite pin down when it was.

BobLoblawLawBlog · 03/02/2018 20:33

You really don't have to pay Jack Wills prices for the kind of jumpers and pinafores you like you know. I've seen loads of those styles in places like Top shop, Dorothy Perkins and even cheaper- Matalan and Asda! If you haven't got a big budget, I would really recommend you start looking at those kind of shops- and nobody will be able to tell the difference anyway!

There's nothing at all wrong with paying a bit more for something you really like, but it may as well be something a bit more special and distinctive!

BobLoblawLawBlog · 03/02/2018 20:39

I saw this denim pinafore the other day in Sainsbury's- might be up your street. The mustard looks good with it too.

WatercolourFlower · 03/02/2018 21:04

Wow I love the Sainsbury's pinafore, I'll have to check my local one as it says it's unavailable online. Thanks for the link 😊
I don't buy everything from jack wills, but I do like some of their cord pinafores and pretty dresses. The stuff I can get cheaper elesewhere, I will do as sometimes their pricing is ridiculous. I do have a dress from there that is 5 years old now, so I think their quality is decent

MadameButerfly · 03/02/2018 21:10

The only thing I would buy in Joules is a blazer, they do amazing blazers. I'm 50.

BobLoblawLawBlog · 03/02/2018 21:13

Definitely worth checking in Sainsbury's store, my local one had loads. Am toying with going back for one now, i do actually really like it!

MadameButerfly · 03/02/2018 21:18

I love this Pinafore

Poppyfields21 · 03/02/2018 21:19

Primark have jumpers really similar to the JW one you like

expatmigrant · 03/02/2018 21:21

You've lost me at 'pinafore'. Will not waste your time any longer Grin
