Emergency hair straighteners

My GHD's have about 3 days life left in them, there is a problem with the wire and connection which google research tells me can't really be fixed. To be fair, they have been used virtually every day since 2008 so I've had my money's worth!

The problem is that I don't have the £100 to replace them just at the moment or the £120 for the cloud nines I'd really like

What would you recommend, ideally under £50 as an emergency replacement?? I wash my hair every day and it must be straightened or I look like a crazy, frizzy mess!!

(I am watching loads on eBay but none are working out)

Hopeful bump!

Might be worth contacting GHD? When mine broke in what would have been about 2007 I sent them back and they replaced them.

Otherwise I genuinely think most straighteners are good now a days. Technology has just caught up so I'd just a really cheap pair and see how you get on

Agree that if you've not used anything else since 2008 then you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of cheaper ones!!

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 29/01/2018 22:31

The Remington ones that are £18 on Amazon. I've been looking into this today because my old ones have packed up. Review on Argos suggest they're as good as GHDs and friends have said the same. I've never had GHDs so can't compare directly, but they do sound good.

WinteryWalk · 29/01/2018 22:33

Oh that's really helpful thank you! So you're suggesting that I'm living in the past with my 2008 straighteners and times have actually moved on?! 😂

Hopefully I'm in for a pleasant surprise! Grin

My hairdresser has used these since her GHDs broke and both of us have noticed a huge difference. They don't pull and cause my hair to break as much and leave my hair feeling so nice. They won't break the bank either :)

My Remington ones are great. They were about £20 on Amazon.

WinteryWalk · 29/01/2018 22:40

Oh I'm excited now, I feel like you've given me 'permission' to look at cheaper ones!!

Which model Remington ones are you all talking about please ? There seem to be a few, and I’m totally gonna get some !

WinteryWalk · 29/01/2018 23:07

I've just ordered these. I was slightly put off the Remington ones by a couple of bad reviews at the top, these seem to have very good reviews and are only £20, they'll be here tomorrow so we'll see what they're like! Thanks for suggesting I ordered cheaper ones!!

also you will have had the old, hot GHDs. the new ones are inferior/less hot. so actually the cheaper ones are more effective! i'll damage my chuffing hair f i want to damage it, GHD 😤

sourpatchkid · 30/01/2018 11:24

Oh! That's why they're shit now a days!

mumgointhroughtorture · 30/01/2018 11:28

I've got those you've ordered . Just be careful of the on/off switch , it's in a stupid position and I keep turning mine off .
They do a good job though for the money .

Girlwhowearsglasses · 30/01/2018 11:30

I've never looked back since buying one of those timer switches that goes on the socket - I worry about leaving straighteners on and if you have one of these the socket turns off after ten minutes or so.

WinteryWalk · 30/01/2018 11:39

Thanks, good tips, I unplug mine and put them away every day for fear of leaving them on! Good to know about the on/off switch though! They're currently 'out for delivery!'

Well they're here, they're hot and they straighten, for £20 I like them!
