Greasy hair doing my bloody head in!

I would like just sometimes to go more than a day between washes. I'm 38. If anything it's got worse recently.

Any wisdom?

My hair and skin are horrendously greasy, ideally my hair needs washing everyday but it's so thick it's just not practical because it's so time consuming to dry.
The best range I've tried is the Elvive clay shampoo and conditioner, it's in green packaging and normally on offer somewhere. With these I can stretch to two days, so I've washed this morning, it will look ok tomorrow but will def need doing again Saturday morning.

Onekidnoclue · 25/01/2018 20:44

Dry shampoo!! It’s wonderful stuff. Changed my mind about it when I was told to put it on the night before in a horseshoe shape along the roots at the top of your head. Then go to sleep without brushing it out and you wake up with lovely hair Grin

mommybear1 · 25/01/2018 20:46

I second the dry shampoo night before treatment helps you to avoid the "powder" look Grin. Also rinsing off use cold water as cold as you can stand apparently it closes the pores it hasn't made a wild difference to me but I told a friend this tip and she swears by it says it's a life changer for her

MsHomeSlice · 25/01/2018 20:51

batiste dry shampoo....i haven't tried the night before thing, but from washing my hair everyday I am now 2/3 times a week

I try to use the "Blonde" version, it seems to be less powdery looking, but my hair is pretty fair so it doesn't show badly

Sillybilly1234 · 25/01/2018 20:52

When you wash your hair do it twice rubbing the shampoo into the scalp not the hair. Only wash it every two days and only use conditioner once every two weeks. Hairdresser recommended that and it works for me.

MikeUniformMike · 25/01/2018 20:54

I don't know if you do this but I find not fiddling with my hair helps.
A different shampoo might work.

Unicorn81 · 25/01/2018 20:57

Superdrug own brand dry shampoo is good and no powdery look. Ive started doing a philip kingsley elastisizer on a sunday and leave it in all day and shampoo twice monday morning, then condition. I then do the next day as dry shampoo and its ok, by the end of the dry shampoo day though im itching to wash it

halfwitpicker · 25/01/2018 20:59

I've just given up and wash every day.

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 25/01/2018 21:02

Oh SAME! I use a clay shampoo and no codintioner and it still only just lasts 2 days.
I'm weaning off breastfeeding so even washing up liquid is still bringing it out with an oily sheen at the mo 🙄🎉
Have you tried that?

Valerrie · 25/01/2018 21:06

My hair is sometimes greasy immediately after I've washed it, especially if I brush it too much while I'm drying it.

I have to wash it every single day, or it literally looks like I've dunked my head in a chip pan.

I've tried everything. Different shampoos, specialist treatments, not washing it all the time, dry shampoo, I never use conditioner. Nothing works, ever. It's vile.

ButteredScone · 25/01/2018 21:06

Tie your hair back at night.

blankets4ever · 25/01/2018 21:08

I have greasy hair and dry shampoo doesn't work on my hair at all. It becomes a mixture of grease with a powder coating, not good.

DavidGandyfanclubpresident · 25/01/2018 21:13

I'm the same, have tried everything over the years. Quite often I'll wash it and as it dries it goes greasy again. Tony & Guy Texture Detox shampoo is ok in small doses, and I use wash n go to wash my hair regularly as it seems to work marginally better than other shampoo. If i tie my hair up before bed it is an oil slick in the morning but wear my hair down in bed and it's a bit sweaty oil slick.
It's been like this all my adult life and I'm well into my thirties now so I guess if I haven't found the cure by now I never will. And it's such a shame as I've got nice glossy healthy hair when it's squeaky clean!

ilovewinterpansies · 25/01/2018 21:15

Have you tried nioxin? It's for fine hair but it has massively helped degrease my hair. It makes my hair squeak after I've washed it.

gryffen · 25/01/2018 21:24

Same issue when I had long hair and now the alopecia kicked in and it's short again it goes greasy quickly.

Vosene works miracles along with a spray detangler by l'oreal kids.

halfwitpicker · 25/01/2018 21:31

Redken Cleansing Creme is good

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 25/01/2018 21:34

I feel like we need a support group.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 25/01/2018 21:39

Watching with interest - my hair was balanced until I used one of Garnier's silicone-free shampoo. After 2 washes my hair was a greasy mess Angry Six months on I have tried all oily hair shampoos with no luck. I'm afraid I will try Fairy liquid this weekend as nothing is working and my hair never feels clean!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/01/2018 21:51

Ok so more detail...

My hair is just below bra strap length and quite thick. I Colour it with live Colour in some violet shade that comes out dark plum. I don't want to be too harsh it will just strip the Colour it's a pain.

Dry shampoo at night does indeed work well but it feels really scummy.

If I tie it up during the day this seems to make almost no difference though I am a bugger for touching my scalp (hangover from having trich)

Dd1 is only 8 and the greasy Hair has started already I'm gutted for her. On the advice of another parent I've started using lemon juice on her scalp just before I wash it. God it's amazing the first time it was like a layer of scum had been stripped off her hair and I could see all her highlights abs red tones she is mite ginger than ever!

I can't do it to my hair can I?

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 25/01/2018 21:52

Are you in a hard water area? That makes for super greasy roots and dry mid lengths and ends (and brassy blondes) get a chelating shampoo if so.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/01/2018 21:54

Moderate I think no limescake but water bit cloudy

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 25/01/2018 21:55

Ah ok. Worth checking (on your water board website)

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 25/01/2018 21:55

Oooh I'm ready to try the lemon! Will it change the colour of my hair? I am dark haired, I don't fancy patchy highlights Grin

taskmaster · 25/01/2018 21:57

Op the only shampoo I ever used that worked is the Loreal clay one. It is brilliant for greasy hair, I can actually go 48 hours plus between washes without looking like I dipped my head in a deep fryer!

Honestly, try it.

JE17 · 25/01/2018 22:00

I gave up attempting to go even 36 hours without washing my hair after I went out for a walk at lunchtime on day 2 and a colleague asked if it was raining outside when I got back in the office. I wash my hair every day now.

I'm going to try out some of the tips on here.
