I would like just sometimes to go more than a day between washes. I'm 38. If anything it's got worse recently.

Any wisdom?

Watching with interest.

Another greasy mare here!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/01/2018 22:08

I've tried the clay shampoo it didn't work for me Sad

Re the lemon I have no idea - dd Hair Colour is somewhere between dark blonde and red. I imagine it will wreck my Colour. I only put it on her scalp but I think it took the build up on her hair in seconds

But rain!! If it rains on my hair that makes it greasy. Exh used to give me grief about drying my hair at night. If I don't use a hair dryer I might as well not bother washing it.,yuck

Paul Mitchell shampoo 2. Works. I divide my hair in two horizontally to wash it so that the shampoo gets right into the underneath roots.

DotCottonDotCom · 25/01/2018 22:16

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the reason why your hair is like this

It’s BECAUSE you wash it so frequently. You are stripping the hair and scalp of oils so frequently they are being overproduced to make up for it.

The only way to stop this is to break the cycle of frequent washing.

I’ve been there and I thought WTF!!! I can’t do that!

But I did it-it absolutely works.

I played around with ponytails, braids etc. For a few weeks. Yep there were some days I was just desperate to wash my hair but try and allow and extra day for now and drag it out more over the next few weeks.

Also silicone free conditioners - they will help. You’re likely to be using silicone laden conditions which just over coat your hair in the end making it look limp

Elend · 25/01/2018 22:16

Can anyone recommend a good chelating shampoo? I've never heard of them before but am in a hard water area and all those descriptions apply to me! Fed up washing my hair every day as well

taskmaster · 25/01/2018 22:18

vIt’s BECAUSE you wash it so frequently. You are stripping the hair and scalp of oils so frequently they are being overproduced to make up for it

People always say that and its just not true for lots of us. It doesn't make the slightest difference,

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 25/01/2018 22:21

@Elend I use AreaH20 for hard water from amazon.

Dot silicone free shampoo is what made my hair greasy!

Elend · 25/01/2018 22:22

DrRanj thank you! :)

Pecano · 25/01/2018 22:24

I used to have really greasy hair and had to was it everyday, and the only thing that made a difference was washing it less frequently. It took a couple of weeks and a shit ton of dry shampoo before I felt like my hair had got used to the new washing routine, but it so much better now. I still was every other day, but only because I go to the gym most nights.

I also started using hair cleanser instead of Shampoo/conditioner as my hair is really fine. I’m using one called New Wash at the moment and it is amazing!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 25/01/2018 22:43

Dot I haven't used conditioner for a long time. It makes no difference to the grease at all if I do or don't use it I just don't because it makes no difference to my hair full stop.

Also dd1 Hair is as bad as mine and I was washing hers once a week! She doesn't fiddle with her scalp and her hair is up most of the time - makes no difference and her hair smells greasy too - I'm
Hoping this is a hormone surge and calms down

I just started using lush 'new' shampoo bar and omg I'm amazed after 2 decades of hair like you describe, I can go 2 nearly 3 days without washing and my hair is in great condition.

MinnieMinchkin · 25/01/2018 22:54

After several years following the curly girl method and trying to stretch out time between washes, using SLS-free shampoos and silicone-free conditioners, I am now happily using a small amount on an SLS-laden shampoo every day and love not having a greasy, itchy scalp. I still prefer a silicone-free conditioner on the mid-lengths and beyond, though.

MrsDilber · 25/01/2018 23:07

I have greasy hair, I can wash it before bed and it be greasy when I brush it in the morning. Batiste Dry Shampoo is the trick. I've got dark hair and use the brunette one.

TwinklyGiraffe · 25/01/2018 23:32

I don’t use conditioner on my hair, just a fine mist of detangling spray before I blow dry it. Doesn’t make any difference.

My hair stays clean for about 3/4 days when I get a salon blow dry though😖 so it is possible.

I always wash it properly including the underneath sections.

I don’t know where I’m going wrong.

mmzz · 25/01/2018 23:36

Get a gentle shampoo and try your best to leave your hair unwashed for as long as possible.
It's a bit like breast feeding: the more milk used, the more milk produced. So if you don't strip all oil from your head, your scalp will stop going into overdrive to keep up with demand!

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 25/01/2018 23:36

I would recommend lush shampoo bars. There are ones specifically designed for greasy hair. They would be able to advise you in the shop. Mine has been a lot less greasy but it didn't need washing as much as yours.

Catatlarge · 25/01/2018 23:41

Weirdly enough there’s another thread about greasy hair!
Head and shoulders minty one all the way.
It’s amazing. I wash my hair twice a week.

Another tip my hair dresser said was to use dry shampoo on dry hair, immediately after washing, not wait for it to be greasy! This tip in itself was amazing!!

Gwynfluff · 26/01/2018 07:45

Read all the old greasy hair threads a month ago as my hair has become greasy and was never feeling clean after being washed. Have long being shampooing scalp only and conditioning ends only.

I would agree the Elvuve stuff is worth a try and cheap. It definitely made a difference. But someone linked to this shampoo

Pharmaceris H Sebopurin normalizing shampoo for seborroheic scalp

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00P15M82W/ref=yo_ii_img?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

And it has honestly made such a difference. I use that in my scalp and the elvive clay conditioner (which is silicone free) on my ends. The shampoo is non drying as well, when many degreasers like T-gel aren’t. Teenage dd with her dad’s fine and prone to grease hair also uses it.

southeastlondonmum · 26/01/2018 08:47

Mine was the same for years. It was impossibly greasy. I would wash every single day - often twice a day as it was so bad. I remember on morning of my wedding having to wash it despite the fact that he had told me not too because it was dripping with grease. I stopped washing it daily on his advice. Honestly it was horrendous and I used loads of dry shampoo. I felt rubbish and my hair looked shit. It took six months but very slowly the oil changed and now with the Elvive clay shampoo done twice I can go 48 hours and it looks quite reasonable. I also wash occasionally with fairy and also use oil oil on hair (its counter indicative) but does work. So I was a non believer but it worked

southeastlondonmum · 26/01/2018 08:47

Sorry he is my hairdresser and friend

Redken24 · 26/01/2018 08:54

It's supposed to be a fifty pee sized I think.
