Are skinnies with knee high boots outdated?

And if the answer is 'yes, hopelessly so', what's the alternative for a size 12 mum, staring down the barrel of 40 and hoping to look reasonably smart and stylish?

I think it depends which boots. I still see some very cool people in chunky biker boots and skinnies.

Clickncollect · 23/01/2018 16:00

I hope they're not as that's pretty much my uniform. And if it is outdated, I don't care anyway.
I'd say they were more of a classic look than outdated!

Tipmeupandpourmeout · 23/01/2018 16:01

Reece Witherspoon looked amazing in them in Big Little Lies last year.

idontlikealdi · 23/01/2018 16:02

What sort of boots would influence my answer!

Celticlassie · 23/01/2018 16:03

I would say so. It's all about the ankle boots now. Preferably with cropped / turned up jeans.

tuttifritti · 23/01/2018 16:04

Low heel ankle boots in suede or matt leather is the new smartish uniform I thought. Would that work for you?

BoogleMcGroogle · 23/01/2018 16:16

Thanks for the answers. I love ankle boots with shot skirts and dresses but ankle boots with jeans confuse me. Either I wear the jeans over the boot, which in the case of my Chelsea boots makes me look like an antiques dealer called Tarquin or they sort of just ruck up at the top of the boot, which feels scruffy. The models on Pinterest don't have this trouble, I know.

I'm wondering, since spring is on it's way, if I should give up on boots and revisit brogues.

clickandcollect I thought they were a classic look too. But I've just ventured out in urban public (London, once in a blue moon)and no one was wearing knee boots at all. Although I suspect we'd be at home in on Sloane Street ;)

I hope so because my legs are too muscly to be able to wear skinny jeans, let alone get them and my legs into knee length boots.

Ankle boots for me :)

PNGirl · 23/01/2018 16:23

It's a bit warm today, to be fair. Certainly in the south. 13 here today!

HildaZelda · 23/01/2018 17:22

Erm, I hope now because that's what I've got on right now!

ChinUpChestOut · 23/01/2018 17:26

You'd want your skinnies to be around the top of the ankle boots. Try rolling them so they are just above, although that depends on just how skinny they are. Otherwise I'd be buying a pair of straight leg jeans or boyfriends that finish a bit higher so that they are above the ankle boot. Another look is turning up the straight legs with one big fold, say around 3 inches. A raw edge to the jeans is also very much "in".

LagoDiComo · 23/01/2018 17:43

I know I am supposed to be wearing ankle boots but they don't suit me so well as knee high boots (large bosom, long back so they balance me out), I always struggle with the rolling/ruching of your jeans/trousers and they are warmer for winter, so I think it depends on what suits, particularly the length of your legs in proportion to the rest of you.

CointreauVersial · 23/01/2018 18:22

Hmmm....a bit dated. I haven't worn knee-length boots with jeans for a few years - it's all about the ankle boot or trainer.

What Chinup said re: rolling/folding/chopping jeans. they shouldn't need to go inside or outside your ankle boots. Don't be afraid of a flash of ankle.

LemonysSnicket · 23/01/2018 18:25

I’m 22 and wear this 24/7

icenasliceplease · 23/01/2018 18:33

The boots that are in between an ankle boot and a knee high boot look fine. (Think Ugg/biker boot height)
You can still tuck your skinnies in, but they wont look as dated as a kneehigh.

I know what you mean about some andle boots. The bottom of the skinnies is sometimes slightly too wide to tuck in and if you roll them you get that draughty feel.
I like to be all tucked in when it's winter Smile

endthefarts · 23/01/2018 18:54

I just cannot get on with ankle boots and skinnies apart from very dainty heeled boots that are below the ankle. Other than those, my large feet look ridiculous in the combination. Knee boots balance out a curvier figure too (which I also have). I know they’re a bit dated but I try to ignore that.

whichwayisout · 23/01/2018 18:59

Definitely not.

Ophelialovescats · 23/01/2018 19:13

If you like the way you look in it , it's good to go !
Being on trend becomes less important as you get older . Being confident with your own decision and choices speaks volumes .
I'm a size 12 and in my early 50s and 'rock' that look!

neveradullmoment99 · 23/01/2018 19:51

I don't wear knee length ones but I do wear biker boots all the time!!!!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 23/01/2018 19:54

It’s a great look, can this get outdated, ah the beauty of being over 40 is that you don’t care but go with what you know you look good in

Plumes · 23/01/2018 19:58

Really dated. Very Kate Moss/Sienna Miller circa 2008.

PaperdollCartoon · 23/01/2018 19:58

I’m 30 and live in this all winter. I don’t care if it’s outdated, it suits me!

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/01/2018 20:03

I think it’s “classic” rather than unfashionable. It’s not a look I personally love on myself, but I do occasionally wear skinny jeans with biker boots if it’s snowing or really wet. I teach a lot of international students and knee-high boots with long padded coats are very popular with the Polish and Russian women all through autumn/winter, regardless of whether it’s raining or whatever.

CountFosco · 23/01/2018 20:15

Being over 40 is not an excuse to give up on fashion and reassessing your wardrobe. I would say that it's not really fashionable anymore but it's not at the 'why did we wear that, it looks terrible and dated' stage yet. Most people who don't care about fashion will think you look fine. So if you like it wear what you have but also try ankle boots again or brogues with socks if you don't want cold ankles.
