Are skinnies with knee high boots outdated?

BoogleMcGroogle · 23/01/2018 15:44

And if the answer is 'yes, hopelessly so', what's the alternative for a size 12 mum, staring down the barrel of 40 and hoping to look reasonably smart and stylish?

I think it can look good in a preppy, riding boots Kate Middleton way.
As long as the jeans are skin tight. But I prefer ankle boots..

Mulberrysilk · 23/01/2018 21:07

Yes, its dated.
Its a pity because its very practical in wet weather.

Brittanyspears · 23/01/2018 21:10

Very dated. But a biker boot or cowboy boot would work. Cowboy boots are back for SS18!

Bluntness100 · 23/01/2018 21:19

Not dated and still very popular, I imagine because it looks good on those who generally wear them.

I alternate between flat knee high and ankle boots with a two inch heel. I get what you're saying about the antiques dealer, as flat ankle boots and skinnies is harder to pull off than many of its wearers clearly realise Grin

Bottom line is if it suits you and you like it, wear it. I really don't agree with only wearing "fashion". Go for stylish and what suits you instead of what someone else perceived as fashionable, and you'll always look good and have confidence.

IrenetheQuaint · 23/01/2018 21:24

Have to say, even I (and I am terminally behind trend) haven't worn knee high boots over jeans for a couple of years now. Ankle boots are fine even if you have to tuck your jeans in. Or mid-calf boots are still acceptable.

Ploppymoodypants · 23/01/2018 21:28

Try getting ankle grazer skinnies. Then you have ankle gap or the jeans seamlessly go into the ankle boots, avoiding the wrinkled look you don’t like. Avoid putting the jeans over the boots. This is only okay with flares or boot cut. Just make sure you have trainer socks so they don’t show.

AnaViaSalamanca · 23/01/2018 21:28

I don't know much about trends, but I think the ones with high heel
and platform would be a bit more dated than the block heeled or flat ones.

But then again how else would you wear a knee high boot that is not dated? With skirts it feels even more dated in my opinion.

WillowySnicket · 23/01/2018 21:32

I would say dated. I even think gorgeous Kate Middleton looked dated in hers. Brogues an option? They'll date pretty quickly too though, I reckon.

WillowySnicket · 23/01/2018 21:35

Although a quick google tells me these https://fashionunited.uk/news/fashion/fall-winter-2018-19-key-footwear-concepts/2017050124339 will be the next big thing. Dang, some of them are ugly! Looks like your knee highs are coming back! Call them longline and bang, you're back on trendGrin

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 23/01/2018 21:41

It's funny, the other night I pulled out from the deepest depths of my closet a pair of mahogany leather 70's style stacked-heel boots that I hadn't worn in at least 10 years and wore them over skinny velvet jeans, and received several compliments on my outfit. It was at an art opening though, so it probably worked in my favour that I was intentionally going out of fashion!

Pollaidh · 23/01/2018 22:06

I'm feeling the knee high boots are getting a bit passe with skinnies, although I'm still wearing knee high with dresses for work (and am far from being a fashion expert). I've just changed to ankle biker boots with skinnies. Boots are from Duo and quite chunky, and are sufficiently wide around the ankle that skinnies fit in with plenty of space to wear.

Brittanyspears · 24/01/2018 09:25

AnotherRoadsideAttraction your 70's style stacked boots sound divine! Very Gucci! Its those black heeled knee high boots that look dated.

stoplickingthetelly · 24/01/2018 13:00

I don't want an ankle gap. I live in the north west. It's bloody freezing in winter and rains all the time! My main aim is staying warm and dry. I love my long boots becauae they do keep me warm and dry. I still see lots of people near me wearing them. Maybe we're all behind the times.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 24/01/2018 13:07

I live in London and work in a shop so I see literally thousands of people a day passing by.
I would say the skinnies and knee high look is not over per se, but it seems to be perpetuated by women who don't look 'otherwise fashionable' if you know what I mean.
There absolutely nowt wrong with it, but it's not cutting edge either.

Bluntness100 · 24/01/2018 13:10

Good comment. The question then op is do you want to look cutting edge. Generally people who do look like a twat. Grin.

Plumes · 24/01/2018 13:15

Yeah. Wear an out of date look of boots over skinny jeans lest anyone mistakes you for a twat.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 24/01/2018 13:20

You can have an ankle gap???

You mean I just went out and bought longer cut skinny jeans so I could wear them with my short boots for no reason?

Knew I should have checked here first.

disclaimer- I'm not stylish.

phoebemac · 24/01/2018 13:22

Who cares if it's out of date or not? It is a practical look which I still wear. I'm a big believer in wearing what you like. Being fashionable should be treated as a bit of fun, not something to be a slave to or agonize over. It's mostly just another way of getting people to buy stuff they don't need.

Plumes · 24/01/2018 13:23

The OP cares presumably since she started the thread?

BuzzKillington · 24/01/2018 13:29

Yes - really dated look. My mil wears knee length boots and jeans.

I like skinnies with an ankle boot. I usually buy ankle grazers jeans because I like a gap, and I wear trainer socks so they don't show.

phoebemac · 24/01/2018 13:31

Plumes yes, I know she cares, I was just trying to say (possibly rather clumsily) that she can wear them if she like them!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 24/01/2018 13:33

Then I guess the words I would use to describe this look are:
A bit Safe
A bit Sloaney ( dependent on type of boot)
A bit mumsy
A bit Home counties.

If any of that chimes with your look then you're golden. Riding type boots are probably the least fashionable. There are still lots in the shops though, so people are still buying them ( though a large proportion were more slouchy styles- plus they were in the sales.)

fishonabicycle · 24/01/2018 13:55

Yeah. Looks like a yummy mummy from 10 years ago, or a principal boy. Biker or chunky boots look ok, as do ankle boots or flat shoes.

Celticlassie · 24/01/2018 14:33

Shay about mid calf boots with skinnies? I'm currently doing the ankle gap but it is cold!

Celticlassie · 24/01/2018 14:33

Shay?

What.
