Are skinnies with knee high boots outdated?

And if the answer is 'yes, hopelessly so', what's the alternative for a size 12 mum, staring down the barrel of 40 and hoping to look reasonably smart and stylish?

Hm well I have a pair of tan riding boots which I still wear a lot with skinnies - yes I probably do look a bit 'sloaney' wearing them but I love them and I don't care. Personally I think they look much better on me than skinnies and ankle boots - I'm tall with skinny legs and big feet, so ankle boots make my legs look like golf clubs.

I was just pondering this as Radio 4 told me skinnies were over. Now I knew they were over, just not that over!

I think I'll carry on with long boots while this winter is here, and then look for something else. but probably still be in skinnies and long boots till winter 2020

so...genuine question, oh stylish ones, - if that's what yummy mummys were wearing 10 years ago, what are they wearing now?

TroysMammy · 24/01/2018 15:35

I don't follow fashion and I wear what's comfortable however I would draw the line at ra-ra skirts and shoulder pads. I love my knee high boots but usually team them with jeggings and leggings.

EmGee · 24/01/2018 15:44

I'm always behind the times. But I think skinnies and long, as well as biker/calf-length boots suit me and are flattering so I don't care whether or not I look dated. I tend to wear ankle boots with dresses as I find they look much more flattering than with jeans (see PPs re ankle length etc).

I bought some hugely expensive long black riding-style (flat) boots a few years ago from Russell & Bromley. Admittedly I have worn them very little as they are very smart, and I prefer my Ugg biker style boots for sheer comfort/ease. That said, these boots were eye-wateringly expensive so I cannot possibly not wear them anymore just because they may be passé!!

OP, why not try some calf-length boots (Ugg do nice ones which look good and are warm) which you can wear with jeans or dresses?

Yes dated but I wear them all winter. So comfy and fab in the rain!

Can someone tell this forriner what "sloany" means?

Plumes · 24/01/2018 16:23

Kate and Pippa Middleton are 'sloaney'. Safe, slightly staid, posh girl. style basically.

Yummy mummies of today wear leather panel leggings and ankle boots, don't they?

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 24/01/2018 18:43

For me, yes they are dated.

TeaAddict235 · 24/01/2018 19:32

I too think that knee high boots + skinnies/leggings/Jeggings/ dress is rather a more classic combination. As long as the boots are tidy /polished and not scuffed then they are rather weather appropriate.

I think it's still got that horsey Home Counties look to it with the stables and glossy hair, but also it's very much worn on the continent very neatly with shirts and or cardigans etc to work.

The boots can finish the look by dressing it up or dressing it down.

Not in my very stylish French city.
