Covering hair on bad hair day?

I often have a problem with my hair and I have been thinking lately I'd just like to wear something over it on those days it's not at its best. But I've never worn a headscarf and I'm not sure how to tie it or even if it could look ok if it covers enough of my hair to hide it. I've also seen some soft jersey beanie type hats I thought might be possible.
I tend to dress quite casually in jeans and t-shirt, tracksuit or yoga pants or similar. So im not that bothered about being stylish but I don't want to look odd. Can anyone suggest anything?
