How much do epilators hurt?

I bought an epilator and now I'm scared to use it. How bad is it really?

A lot

CoperCabana · 10/01/2018 21:31

Like, really a lot!

YouWereRight · 10/01/2018 21:32

Oh joy!

No wonder there aren't epilators aimed at men.

God yes the pain is horrendous. Apparently you get used to it eventually but I couldn’t and mine is now at the back of the cupboard.

Emily7708 · 10/01/2018 21:43

A friend recommended taking a couple of strong painkillers half an hour before using it but I never did try it.

DeputyBrennan · 10/01/2018 21:43

It took me several days to complete a full leg when I first bought an epilator. I found it excruciatingly painful. However, through sheer stubbornness I persisted and the second time the pain was markedly less.

Now, a few years on, I feel a mere tickle Smile

dudsville · 10/01/2018 21:45

It may be similar to when you started plucking eyebrows. I remember that used to make my eyes water! I can't however consider that for my legs. Eyebrows have only a few hairs, legs have hundreds!

halcyondays · 10/01/2018 21:46

not that much, far less painful than waxing

DeputyBrennan · 10/01/2018 21:47

I’m not recommending that you put yourself through the ordeal, but just letting you know that if you want to try it, the first time will quite likely be a complete different level of pain to all subsequent goes!

Greenteandchives · 10/01/2018 21:48

I have one. I used to have to have a couple of drinks before doing my legs, but it’s true, it does get better over the years. Grin

YouWereRight · 10/01/2018 21:49

I've never plucked my eyebrows, or waxed anything. At all.

Eek. Keep putting it off by not finding the perfect epilating song Hmm

I've got one and it's fine. A little painful on the knee caps. I don't have lots of hair though.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 10/01/2018 21:49

I bought one several years ago. Used it once and threw the evil implement into the cupboard, never to see the light of day ever again. Horrendous. I use a man’s razor and the Philip’s IPL thing. Have been using the IPL (legs, pits & bits) for about 18 months and it has made a HUGE difference.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 10/01/2018 21:49

Large glass of wine for your first attempt. It hurts like hell. Completely used to it now though.

123getwiththewicked · 10/01/2018 21:49

Tried one on my DH's bum as he had a pinonidal (so?) sinus so he didn't want to risk another one. He wept.

123getwiththewicked · 10/01/2018 21:50

So should be sp sorry 😂

Heratnumber7 · 10/01/2018 21:50

Much less hurt than waxing. I've been epilating for about 3 years and now it's just more of a prickle

AnakinCyberwalker · 10/01/2018 21:50

I've got used to it. As pp says, it's a mere tickle now.

Those springy face hair removal tools though...horrendous and hairs on the back of my neck are now erect from just typing about them Confused

123getwiththewicked · 10/01/2018 21:51

Pilonidal it should be.

brizzledrizzle · 10/01/2018 21:53

At first it was awful but now it's fine of course I don't have any facial hair

RowenasDiadem · 10/01/2018 21:54

They hurt like a bitch but if you really, really pull and stretch the skin, it hurts less. I can do my shins but once I get to the sides? I remember why I don't use the epilator. And I put it away again. Ouch ouch ouch.

YouWereRight · 10/01/2018 21:54

Springy face thing? Say what?

OP posts:
SpadesOfGlory · 10/01/2018 21:55

It's the most pain I've ever experienced.

Disclaimer: I have never given birth Grin

mummabubs · 10/01/2018 21:55

Really?! I have an epilator and I love it! (Mine's a Phillips something or other). It hurt the first time but I think I was tense as I wasn't sure what to expect. Honestly it doesn't hurt at all on legs or underarms, the only time it's occasionally painful is bikini line but mine you can use in the bath so if I've been brave enough to epilate there I just do it in a nice warm bath! I tried waxing once and that was WAY more painful.

Epilate away OP!

TheDogHasEatenIt · 10/01/2018 21:57

It gets better the more you use it, I hardly felt it at all on my legs after the first few times. I remember the agony of doing under my arms the first time I did it. I cried tears of pain as i was doing it and i had a wet/dry one and was doing it in the shower which was supposed to help with the pain. I had to do them over a few days, the pain was sooo bad. Now i am older, i have thrown away my epilator and am hairy and give no fucks!
