What boots with knee-length dresses??

Are knee-high boots with dresses very out of fashion now?

I've recently bought a few lovely dresses (smart-casual, which I'll be wearing to work) that end at my mid-knee and need footwear to go with them. So - are knee boots and dresses frumpy? If so, ankle boots instead? And if so, what style?

I don't do high heels, btw! More of a flats/ brogues kind of gal.

Brogues would be cool

vitaminC · 04/01/2018 19:42

I would say it depends on the style of the dress.
Where I live the climate often requires knee boots and I tend to wear those with a shift dress or pencil skirt. I.e. quite a fitted silhouette.
With a skater or floatier type of dress, ankle boots/Chelsea boots/brogues go better, imo.

Closetlibrarian · 04/01/2018 21:13

They are more fitted/ shift type dresses.

Brogues do look ok. But I'd prefer to wear boots in winter... I'm in the South East of the UK.

I don't think knee boots work with fitted dresses. My recommendation would be for an ankle boot, with a small heel. Possibly a sock-boot type, so slim fitting top, ending just above the ankle - looks elegant.

BinkyandBunty · 05/01/2018 06:02

Knee boots with dresses and skirts are a no-no for me too. I'm very tall, fairly slim and still feel dumpy and mumsy in them.

I prefer high-ish ankle boots with a low or medium heel.

heartyrebel · 05/01/2018 06:13

Knee hight boots and dresses rarely look good on anyone. An ankle boot with a heel looks good though

Closetlibrarian · 05/01/2018 09:36

Great, thanks all! Time to go ankle-boot-shopping

What do people wear knee high boots with then? Over skinny trousers (still)?

Yep, over skinny jeans.

Feawen · 05/01/2018 11:40

I love knee boots and wear them over skinny trousers or with woolly tights and shorter skirts. They haven't been particularly fashionable for a few years but I like them and have some nice ones so I wear them regardless.

However, with a knee length dress, the hem of the dress would surely be level with the top of the boots, so I can't picture that working too well. I think it would make my legs look wider and shorter than they are.

I'd go for flat low-cut ankle boots, preferably with a v-shape at the front of the ankle to help elongate my leg, or for taller ankle boots/ mid-calf length boots with a moderate block heel.

vitaminC · 05/01/2018 13:45

Ha, interesting.I live in France and fashions are obviously very different here.

Skinny jeans with long boots feels very dated here (in fact I see very few people in skinnies at all these days). Long boots obviously don't go with other styles of jeans, so most people I see in knee boots are wearing skirts/dresses.

Thigh boots with mini skirts or sweater+leggings are also very popular here right now.

Ankle !!

Closetlibrarian · 05/01/2018 14:38

Well, my knee-high boots come to the top of my calves (i.e. finish below the knee) and the dresses stop at mid-knee. So not quite level (about an inch or two gap). But I get your point Faewen!

This is actually all quite pleasing news as my tall boots are a bit old and knackered and, as I rarely wear them over skinnies, this means I can invest in new ankle boots instead.

I sometimes wear knee boots with midi skirts or dresses. Works for me, I like the hem covering the boot top and it's good and warm as well.

SimplyNigella · 06/01/2018 10:49

I think long boots and dresses can still work well, but you need to get the proportions right. I saw a woman recently wearing a very simple black polo neck jumper dress with flat, tan over the knee boots. She looked amazing, although it didn’t hurt that she was very slim and the clothes looked very expensive.

I struggle to find ankle boots that don’t cut my legs off, I have curvy calves but slim ankles so most ankle boots make my legs look thicker than they are. I wish there was more choice for V fronted ankle boots.

DelphiniumBlue · 06/01/2018 11:47

Depends entirely on your legs. Ankle boots worn with dresses are really unflattering on me, as are brogues,so I wouldn't wear them. However if you've got slim lower legs and smallish feet they might look nice.
Personally, I wear knee length boots as they suit me best.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2018 11:49

I would wear knee high boots. Don't care if they're out of fashion.
Ankle boots look silly with dresses imo, just a fashion at the moment.

oldbirdy · 06/01/2018 11:52

I have tree trunk legs and by far the most flattering leg wear with a dress for me are pull on fabric type boots, though any Matt boot is ok. Would never wear ankle boots with a dress, my calves are too hefty.

heateallthebuns · 06/01/2018 12:37

Meghan markle just wore some faith cone heel over the knee boots with a midi skirt and some Stuart Weizmann ones on Christmas Day with a midi dress. She looked good.

UsernameInvalid66 · 06/01/2018 17:12

I would wear ankle boots with that type of dress. If you can tolerate a medium heel, maybe something like this:

www.bonton.com/product/1269180.html?ranMID=36061&ranEAID=Ecj26XL3y4I&ranSiteID=Ecj26XL3y4I-G6AaiMmWlrKlD04thxEOVg&utm_source=LSAFF&utm_medium=AFL&utm_campaign=LS&CID=LSAFF-AFL-LS&siteID=Ecj26XL3y4I-G6AaiMmWlrKlD04thxEOVg

or the same sort of style but lower if you prefer (I got some like that from River Island a few months ago, they may have a few left). Unless you only want to wear them with black-based outfits, I think taupe is one of the most versatile colours for that kind of boots.

RavingRoo · 06/01/2018 17:14

Shoe boots or very slim fit ankle boots.

NeganLovesLucille · 06/01/2018 17:23

My calves are quite wide from lots of cycling when I was younger so ankle boots and dresses look ridiculous on my. I wear knee high boots and knee length dresses for work and I always think I look Ok

Now I'm wondering if i don't look ok at all Confused

RavingRoo · 06/01/2018 17:27

@negan - opaque tights + black ankle length boots or shoe boots with a bit of heel look more professional than knee length boots.

RavingRoo · 06/01/2018 17:28

I work in a traditional industry tho

woodhill · 06/01/2018 17:37

I wear just below knee boots with skirts, nice and warm and seem to look good imo
