Help! Simple cotton trousers/jeans in size 20 that don't cling...

As above. I have scoured the website of every retailer I could think of and no joy. My mum has asked me to help her find a simple pair of black jeans and a pair of black cotton trousers for the warmer months (capri or full length).

Everything seems to be either skin-tight ("skinny style" or leggings) or polyester, or otherwise unappealing to an older woman with a classic style. The brands that produce higher quality clothing seem to stop around size 16 or 18 at a push. I won't even mention that mum is tall so a longer length would be wonderful... I have found a few items in Gap before, but no joy this time around.

Any savvy plus-size Mumsnet shoppers who could point me to classic clothes with natural fibres?

Would she consider linen blend wide legged trousers as the cotton pair? I live (in a hot place) in Next and M&S wide legged linen trousers.

For lovely linen trousers (but pricy) that go up to bigger sizes I would recommend Poetry. I wear wide or straight leg linen trousers all summer and the Next ones are great for the money but the Poetry linen is heavier weight. But 5x the price!

Boden do up to size 22 and do long length trousers. The Richmond trousers are very popular on here.

I would have though M&S would have done but it seems their standard length trousers go to a bigger size than their long (which seems daft to me, they do the same thing with petite, only go down to size 8 although standard sizing goes down to size 6). But M&S does very generous sizing so maybe an 18 would be OK.

Bon Marche jeans are good value, they are very stretchy and you need a size smaller than usual. they also come in various leg lengths.

THANK YOU for the Poetry recommendation!! I was not familiar with the brand and the clothes look lovely! Way out of my mum's budget, so I hope I can get away with a white lie about how much they cost. Are they generally true to size, or do they run large or small?

A linen blend would work for mum, as long as it's not too scratchy (and otherwise fits). I bought her a pair from La Redoute once which fell apart within a few washes. So I'm very happy to pay for quality as long as I get away with disguising the price from her.

Thank you also very much for the other tips. I've checked M&S and sent her a few links but I think I only found blends with a high percentage of artificial fibres there. I didn't even think of Next, will check that too (and Bon Marche, though she won't like stretchy trousers as they make her feel she looks like an overstuffed sausage...) Ditto the Boden Richmonds. They seemed so slim cut that I didn't even consider them, but I'll have another look. I have bought capris for her from Boden before, but the material was crazy heavy for summer.

Try Cotton Traders. They do loads of different styles of cotton trousers and crops etc.

How about Landsend?

Ilovelearning · 06/01/2018 01:35

I've found the Tu range at Sainsburys very good for linen trousers, but you have to wait until nearer summer for them to come in store.

Thank you for the further recommendations! Cotton Traders is another brand I had not heard of. I'll check Landsend and Tu as well.

Sorry just seen your question about Poetry sizing, I would say they are a bit generous but mostly true to size. The company Wrap London are their sister company, quite similar in style but sadly similar price ranges! I wait for the sales with both.
