Soap bars, I can't believe the difference it's made to my hands

This is sort of a general thank you to those who posted about soap bars on a few informative threads.

I've been meaning to try it for ages instead of liquid hand soap and wandered though the soapy bit in TK Maxx yesterday and bought a bar.

I have awful problems with dry skin on on my hands and the skin on my knuckles cracking. I only started using it yesterday but I can see and feel a difference already. It's amazing!

Liquid hand soap is the devils work! Normal soap bars all the way for me!

MrsMotherHen · 04/01/2018 14:57

Try wool fat soap! Its amazing so so soft!

FlaviaAlbia · 04/01/2018 15:28

It really is. I knew a carex with silver one shredded my hands but I didn't realise the extent that the ones I thought were good for my hands were drying them out.

Oh I haven't come across wool fat soaps yet Mrs must look at those!

I have to try this! My knuckles are always cracked and bleeding in winter. I have a few Lush soak bars so will give them a whirl to see if it makes a difference.

Shantotto · 04/01/2018 16:15

I am a soap convert too! I use it for hands and body. I've slacked off recently and gone back to the hand soap we have and my hands are awful again!

The hand soap is Jason so is SLS and all that other 'bad' stuff free, but it still wrecks my hands.

My DP is so confused about why I've developed a soap obsession.

Olive Oil soap is amazing on my hands. Keeps them soft for ages.

ALLIS0N · 04/01/2018 16:19

I buy unscented soap bars in pack store of three from Lidl / Aldi. Cheap as chips. No liquid soap or shower gel allowed in this house as we all have sensitive skin.

My kids didn’t even have soap in the bath until they were about 5.

Shannaratiger · 04/01/2018 16:19

My hand is terrible, will go and buy a bar of soap and a soap dish.

Vitalogy · 04/01/2018 16:22

There's some lovely ones in TK Maxx isn't there.
These are nice too, you can get them in Holland and Barrett, big bars as well. Nesti Dante.

I was looking at Nesti Dante on amazon but it's so hard to pick scents online, I'm passing Holland and Barrett tomorrow though.

I can't believe I just used the olive oil soap my friend brought me back from Greece as a drawer scent then binned it not that long ago. Looking back, that was horribly ungrateful Blush

Yes I can only use bars too. When my hands are bad if I do use liquid soap I can feel it stinging

CoperCabana · 04/01/2018 17:30

I would rather use a bar but hate the mess they make and not that keen on soap dishes. Anyone recommend a good soap / dish combo that won’t look or make a mess? Or allow the soap to slide around everywhere?

StealthPolarBear · 04/01/2018 17:33

No sadly not. I just wash it often

Makinglists · 04/01/2018 17:37

We have up on liquid hand soapy when Ds2 was a toddler- to much pumped down the plug. Ive found pears soapy really good - it stays solid till the end so kids cant mangle it. They do a blue one which doesn't have the traditional coal tar smell. I have vvv. Dry hand but they are less dry with bar soap.

Vitalogy · 04/01/2018 17:37

Yes you can go in and have a good sniff. My favourite two are in the photo.

Weezol · 04/01/2018 17:37

My hands got so dry and cracked the that GP gave me E45 hand wash. It was better though still not great. Wandering around the shops I saw the bars of Pears Original soap. When I was growing up only posh people had that so on a whim I got a bar.

My hands have been fine since I started using it a couple of years ago. I can't remember the last time I used hand cream.

FadedRed · 04/01/2018 17:43

Cross post Grin

Fekko · 04/01/2018 17:44

They take me back! Very popular in France in the 1970s!

So soap bars are better for washing hands then? I prefer a bad for the bath/shower anyway.

NannyR · 04/01/2018 17:48

Pears soap is really good at not going soft and gooey when it's left in a wet soap dish.
The wire soap dishes keep the soap dry but they are a pain to clean, I just use a ceramic dish and rinse and dry it every day or two.

Weezol · 04/01/2018 17:51

Faded Great minds and all that...Smile

FlaviaAlbia · 04/01/2018 18:11

My granny had one of those, I'm almost tempted to get one for the sake of nostalgia Grin

I don't know... one where the soap is barrel shaped and hangs down gave me a jump once when it was peeking out from a shower curtain on holiday. It really looked like a willy 😊 !

StealthPolarBear · 04/01/2018 18:17

Surely wire dishes will go in the dishwasher
